Interviewed May 2012 in Madison, WI (took 2 weeks)
I had an exceptional phone interview which was very thorough and the HR person very professional. The following week an interview was set up with a Regional Manager who was filling in for the District Manager who had recently left the company. The interview was all situational and very canned. The first question he asked me was whether or not I liked money or vacations as reward. He never asked any questions related to my qualifications, skill sets or previous success. Simply gave me scenarios and wanted to know how I would respond. This is a great company, however geared more for college graduates who are willing to take a small salary, go through extensive training and then relocate on demand. They were very open about that. I have years of experience in sales and sales management therefore it was not a good fit for me.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 2 weeks)
Starts with a phone interview to "touch base", later you will receive a call for a real phone interview. The HR (or GFS recruiter) will be very nice but don't let that give you a false sense this job is anything other than a hours intense remedial labor job.
Then they will call you back for a sit down interview with the DM, sometimes the GM may be in the interview as well. They will ask normal questions about past jobs, how you took care of unhappy customers etc. It will take about 30 -45 minutes.
Interview Questions
Negotiation Details
There really is none, they will make you a offer and you just need to decide if the offer is good enough to make it worth the 50+ hours a week plus time spent in required store meetings and overnight alarm calls from old faulty freezers.

Interviewed Jan 2012 (took a day)
I was scheduled for an interview at one of their hiring events. There was a brief conversation (mini-interview) with someone who was screening candidates. This was followed by a 45 minute interview with two interviewers, and that was followed by a 30 minute interviewers with two more interviewers. Everyone was very friendly, but I felt that the questions were unnecessarily complex since I was only interviewing for a cashier position. In total, I was at the interview (including wait times, and I only arrived a few moments early) for just under two hours. Two hours? For a cashier position?
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
They seemed like nice people to work for, but ultimately they were not offering enough pay to compete with similar businesses in the area. This position was also for a new store that was opening, and I would have been expected to commute two hours each way to another store several times for training. Couldn't you do the training in the new store before it is open? That seemed like a lot of costly commuting for an $8/hr position. That combined with the lengthy interviews made me feel like this company likes to ask a lot from it's employees without giving appropriate compensation in return.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Kenosha, WI (took 5 days)
Got called for an interview. Could not believe it was a 2:1 interview for a warehouse position, seemed very unnecessary and out of the ordinary. Typical stuff like why are you interested, behavioral questions, but still pretty in depth, again, this was a warehouse position.

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Grand Rapids, MI (took 3 weeks)
I had three interviews with the recruiter and HR at Gordon Foodservice. There were alot of questions including a few that were unexpected. One question 'Describe your perfect day at work' believe it or not seemed to be the toughest. I am not sure what kind of answer they were looking for.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Miami, FL (took 6 weeks)
6 interviews in total. First a personality test over the internet, then a phone call, then 1/1 with you manager, after that with regional manager and finally with sales director. After that there might be one more step that is ride with a sales representative.
Learn about the culture of the company, this is very important for the company.

Interviewed Mar 2011 (took 4 weeks)
I found this job opening on the job boards and then contacted the company directly to see if the position had been filled, and I was directed to complete the online application process. I was then contacted by the HR manager and scheduled to take online I.Q. and personality test. About a week later I was scheduled to interview with the Area/District Sales Manager in town.
This interview was typical with all the standard questions about work history and background, except because my sales background was NOT in food product (but I have sold to restaurants, independent & corporate chains) I was asked to take a day and visit several restaurants and meet with the kitchen managers/cooks and see if this was something I "really wanted to do." I completed that assignment that day and emailed the ASM a detailed report regarding the six restaurants I visited.
I was then contacted about a two weeks later to schedule a meeting at the regional distribution center, about 130 miles away. Met with Area Sales Manager and regional VP, with slightly more intense questions about how I would handle customers who demand "too much" and if I would have a problem with collecting on past due accounts. Another question was "how whould I handle a prospect that would not buy from me even though I had been stopping in for a long time, and they called me on a Sunday and said they needed steaks that day because their regular supplier could not deliver?" They wanted to hear that I would deliver them myself on a Sunday and also demand that I continue to get their steak business for doing that.
I was then asked if I would agree to a day-long, ride-a-long with a account rep in his territory?
About a week later I went on the ride-a-long and I felt like I had good report with the rep, even helping out at the end of the day with delivering some product to a customer back in what would have been my territory about 80 miles away, saving another rep and the company travel cost to get the product to the customer in time. The rep seemed nice enough, although he did take some product from one of his customers (with their knowledge but without asking...SOP I guess for this rep). When I ask the rep about earnings potential he was vague and I never did get a straight answer from anyone on this point. I felt that I had excellent rapport with the customers I met and engaged with each easily.
About a week later I received a call from the ASM that they had decided to go with "someone more in-line with their culture." Frankly I don't understand what went wrong as a customer later told me that the rep they hired was not as "good" as I was and they even quit doing business with Gordon.
I would rate this interview process as difficult because of the personal expense in time and money spent and the clearly ambigious reason for not selecting me.
