Interview and hiring process is very lengthy. It starts with a phone interview. In a about a week this was followed by a face - face interview with an Area Manager. In about another week this was followed by another face - face interview with a Regional Manager. In about one more week another face - face interview was scheduled with a Senior Director. In between there were some other brief phone interview followup questions.

I was contacted via phone to come in for an interview. The interview process was very easy. I learned a bit about the history of the company and then was asked typical interview questions. I initially met with the store manager who was very nice and very easy going which made it a lot easier to relax. I then had a second interview the following day with the assistant manager who asked basically the same questions. I took a seat in the break room when we were finished and then I was offered a job on the spot. Overall it was easy and not nerve wracking at all.

    • None of the questions were difficult. It was all mainly about my experience.   Answer Question

Walk in nice, they ask you some questions, and you leave. They don't expect much. As long as you show up on time, treat people with respect, and look decent, you should be fine. They will go into a long tangent about their drug process and how it never fails either. Get ready about that.

Filling out an application is done online. First is a phone call letting you know that they are interesting in hiring you and will request a formal interview. The store manager will interview you and the assistant manager may or may not be present. Basic questions, such as why should we hire you, what was something that you wish you could have done better at a former job, how would you express yourself as an employee. If they want to hire you they will call you back for a second time and give you a formal offer.

I had an exceptional phone interview which was very thorough and the HR person very professional. The following week an interview was set up with a Regional Manager who was filling in for the District Manager who had recently left the company. The interview was all situational and very canned. The first question he asked me was whether or not I liked money or vacations as reward. He never asked any questions related to my qualifications, skill sets or previous success. Simply gave me scenarios and wanted to know how I would respond. This is a great company, however geared more for college graduates who are willing to take a small salary, go through extensive training and then relocate on demand. They were very open about that. I have years of experience in sales and sales management therefore it was not a good fit for me.

I applied online. The process took a weekinterviewed at Gordon Food Service in August 2011.

    Interview Details

I was contacted by phone about a week after applying. I believe it was a Saturday when I was called and my interview was on Monday. I showed up five minutes early. The manager informed me that he liked to get to know the applicants as people instead of asking typical interview questions. He asked me about my hobbies, what career I wanted to have when I was older (I was only 16 at the time), he threw in a few "typical" interview questions. I made sure to ask questions about the position I was applying for, he was delighted that I was asking questions. The manager complimented my outfit. I was wearing a grey and white pin striped cotton dress with a collar and black leather belt, panty hose, polished black leather heels, and had my hair pulled back in a ponytail. He said it was refreshing to see a young person dressed so professionally, especially for a job interview. The manager had a list of handwritten questions on a piece of paper in front of him, he checked off each question as he asked it and checked it off again when I answered. I had studied up on the company before my interview and learned as much as possible. During the interview the manager started telling me about the company. When he said "This company has been around for more than a hundred years," I politely gave him the exact age of the company. He looked amused at the fact that I knew the exact age of the company. When he listed the names of the President, CEO, and Chairman, he mixed up the names of the President and CEO. Because I had studied the company I noticed his mistake and gently corrected him. When I corrected him, he started to grin and asked me what else I knew about the company. When I told him that I had studied the company over the weekend to prepare for my interview he asked my why I had done it. I told him "I looked at the statistics of how many unemployed people live in this city, then took into account how many unemployed people from the neighboring cities would apply for jobs in this city and came up with the number 7,000. The I took into account how many open job listings were on Monster.com for this city (1,500). I am only qualified for 65 of those jobs because of my age and the fact that I haven't had a paying job before. So if I have to compete with everyone else applying for this job, which could be up to 7,000 people, and most of them having more business experience and schooling than me, I wanted something to make me stand out from the crowd and show you that I want and deserve this job." He then asked if I had any other interviews lined up, which I did. He said that he didn't want to lose the chance of having me work there, and even though it was company policy to have 2 interviews, he wanted to hire me right then if I wanted the job. I told him I would be happy to work there, and he asked me to return on Thursday at 3pm to sign papers, take a drug test, and watch training videos.

    Interview Questions
    • There really weren't any difficult questions. He did ask me if I were shopping in Lowes or Home Depot and I needed a particular item that they did not have, what would I expect the sales associate to do.   View Answer
