Interviewed Sep 2010 in Houston, TX (took 1 week)
panel interviews, then one on one interviews with behavioral questions. the interview process was pretty easy as long as you talked a lot and had charisma. they tend to select enthusiastic people who liked to talk a lot, so make sure you are not shy.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Houston, TX (took a day)
I just recently had a group interview with HEB and to say so the least it was very disappointing. I expected it to be a bit more professional. I could see they wanted to get to know everyone personality but it came off very awakward. They had a group panel of 4 who all came off very stuck up and rude. They seem like they already had an idea of who they wanted right when they walked in to the room. Everyone had to draw a picture of where they wanted to work at in the store and sing a song which there was no way around it. It even got more interesting when we had to do some activity involving a Mr. Potato Head. Im not sure if a pre-school themed interview is the right way to go.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Spring, TX (took a day)
Applied online. 9-10 other people in the interview with 3 managers. We had to work together to make a special/meal deal out of 2-3 items. Then we had to try to sell one of the items to a manager posing as a customer. And finally, they asked us what dept. we'd least like to work in.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Austin, TX (took 2 days)
I applied to the job because it seemed like they wanted sales experience which I have. In the first interview I got the impression that the job included unloading 60# boxes of frozen cod from trucks - which I am not able to do and I made that clear. Still the interviewer told me I was going to be called in for a second interview. This interview was done by a manager who seemed to be one or two rungs above the first interviewer. There were a lot of questions and I had to give a sales presentation on the beverage I was drinking. I was then directed to the floor to do a food demonstration at the seafood counter. Since I was a little bit dressed up I asked for an apron and was brought a giant rubber apron - which I graciously donned although I think I should have just taken my chances with the food spilling on me. I offered people shopping in the store tastes of a new food product they were introducing while the two managers stood at a distance and watched me. Afterward they came up to me and said I did a great job and they would be calling me. When I got home I checked my email and there was a form message: "The search to locate an ideal candidate for the ------------ has provided H-E-B with many outstanding applicants such as you and we sincerely appreciate your time and effort. At this time we are proceeding forward with other candidates."
You are welcome to apply for any open position at www.heb.com/careers.
Thank you again!

I think the email was sent before I even got to my house. They had seemed so positive I decided to be brave and just call the first interviewer to make sure the email wasn't a mistake. He said he didn't know that those emails got sent and he had planned to call me personally. He said I wouldn't be able to do the job because I couldn't lift 60# boxes of frozen codfish! Why did they call me in for that 2nd interview?...I didn't ask because I figured since the interviewer seemed to like me he might be a good reference if another more appropriate job came up.
I've received 8 or 9 of these little form rejections. I think the thing that bothers me on these HEB interviews is the lack of feed back. They really ask you to put your heart into the interview process sharing intimate details of your life, doing impromtu skits in group interviews and then there is absolutly no feed-back as to why you weren't hired.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 1+ week)
This was the most grueling interview process I have ever undergone. Multiple interviews and screenings, personality tests disguised as games, group and 1 on 1. The work culture demands total commitment to the job--if your availability isn't midnight to midnight, if you go to school, have a family, or have a life be prepared to pay the consequences: minimal hours to the tune of as low as 4 per week.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in San Antonio, TX (took 3 days)
The team's interview style seemed VERY informal. They didn't ask technical questions nor really any substantial questions like most interviews. They were more concerned with what you had experience with. I found myself trying to drag responses out of them. I respect their decision, but from my standpoint, it was likely a blessing in disguise as it did not seem that they took the interview seriously and, quite honestly, felt like they wasted my time as well as theirs. I'm sure it may have been a meeting to see if my personality fit with theirs, yet they seemed like "lumps on a log". I sensed a feeling of tension and awkwardness...I believe things happen for a reason.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Bastrop, TX (took a day)
I was interviewed by a pharmacist and the pharm tech trainer. They asked me questions about the pharm tech school program I attended and about my experience with customer service. They also showed me a series of pictures and asked me what I saw (a friendly face, a customer who needs help, etc). They then showed me around the pharmacy and asked me if I had any questions. They were both very friendly and warm, which I think promoted confidence in me and allowed me to do the best possible interview I could have done. As a result, they offered the job to me the next day even though they were supposed to call at the end of the week to schedule second interviews.

Interviewed Aug 2011 (took 3 days)
I applied online and received a phone call inviting me to a "Group Interview". I dressed in business casual since I was applying for a cashier position. This is the first time I'd ever heard of a "Group Interview", and to be honest I have absolutely no idea what the interview team was looking for, but apparently not me. I received an email the next day telling me that they were going another direction, in other words - I didn't make the grade.
