Very Difficult Interview
Interviewed at H E B
Interview Details – I applied online for the customer service position. I did not receive a call or any contact for an interview other than an email stating that my application would not be moving forward.
I applied online and the process took 1+ week - interviewed at H E B in May 2013.
Interview Details – Phone interview with recruiter, very easy getting to know you type questions, not technical. Face to Face interview with entire team was very odd. I didn't feel like they were prepared to conduct an interview, but I might have just caught them on a busy day. Very little tech talk, mostly getting to know you type questions. They asked why I wanted to come to HEB at least 4 times. When I showed up for the interview the hiring manager opened the door for me, and didn't introduce himself until he walked me to the receptionist. When I asked the receptionist for him by name, she said "well that is him behind you..." Overall, it was a very odd interview process.

The process took a day - interviewed at H E B in May 2012.
Interview Details – It was very simple. I got a call from a manager and was interviewed by him. He asked me questions off of this sheet. Some of the questions were what did you like/dislike about your last job, why do you want to work at HEB, what can you bring to HEB. Then I had to look at some pictures and say what was wrong in each picture. I didn't get because they didn't want to hire anyone temporarily, which is what I was going for.
Interview Question – When is a time you helped someone? Answer Question
I applied through an employee referral and the process took 2 months - interviewed at H E B in March 2012.
Interview Details – Went through 2 phone interviews, 2 assessments, 2 one on one interviews over a two month period. The people interviewing were great, very friendly and made me feel comfortable. The interview process is a little convoluted, you're not 100% sure what comes next or how long it will take. That said, they answered all of my questions honestly and were very candid about the company and the job expectations. Going to the main office for interviews is confusing, the doors are locked and if there is no securitiy there at the time, you have to wait outside. I would advise people to ask a lot of questions and be patient. It can be a lengthy process.
Interview Question – Tell me about a time when you had to terminate someone. What was the situation and what was the final outcome. Answer Question
Negotiation Details – Negotiations are possible, always negotiate. For salary, for vacation time, etc.
Very Easy Interview
I applied through an employee referral and the process took 3 days - interviewed at H E B in October 2011.
Interview Details – The team's interview style seemed VERY informal. They didn't ask technical questions nor really any substantial questions like most interviews. They were more concerned with what you had experience with. I found myself trying to drag responses out of them. I respect their decision, but from my standpoint, it was likely a blessing in disguise as it did not seem that they took the interview seriously and, quite honestly, felt like they wasted my time as well as theirs. I'm sure it may have been a meeting to see if my personality fit with theirs, yet they seemed like "lumps on a log". I sensed a feeling of tension and awkwardness...I believe things happen for a reason.
I applied in-person and the process took a day - interviewed at H E B in August 2011.
Interview Details –

Scenario analysis: give you branding case study for you to analyze
I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at H E B in July 2011.
Interview Details – Online Job description was accurate, and interesting. I applied because HEB employees seem like they enjoy their jobs. I was called for interview within 10 days of submitting my online application. The HR representative was friendly, and very open about working for the company, the positions duties and responsibilities. I felt my time was respected, and valued. I respected the honesty from HEB in their hiring process.
Interview Question – No difficult questions. HR Representative's demeanor was casual, honest and friendly. View Answer
Reason for Declining – Position was closer to entry level than I anticipated, and pay rate was lower than I could accept. The position would have been better suited to someone just starting a career. (i.e. recent graduate )
