At the first we are advised to take up a aptitude test. Later some of them got shortlisted. Among them I was also shortlisted. Later there was a face to face interview. It consisted only one round. It had technical round and HR round at one stretch. He asked something on reality about technical things like how can you define inheritance in real world?, How can you manage the searching of a particular things in Google in a ordered way. He asked some funny questions also to test my vocabulary like , Can you tie the tie? Which is your favorite abroad country? I said Switzerland. He told me to justify for it. I did. Finally got selected in HCL as a software engineer. :)

Interviewed Dec 2010 in Chennai (India) (took 1+ week)
2 technical rounds, both 1:1. First round tested me for minimal design experience. A developer with 5 yrs hands on exp should get though. 2nd round tested me for articulation of technical concepts rather than design/arch. Consistency in communication was tested for in 2nd round.
1st round is understandably conducted by a relatively junior resource. 2nd round, a very senior resource. Panelist in both rounds described the role very clearly. You get the feeling that they are serious about the process and do a good job of it.
Basically they need smart guys (or lets say guys who are not so dumb) who can talk and walk technology and conduct themseleves decently in-front of clients, even if they are not top-notch.
The Indian IT industry is trying to get rid of its self created menace of grooming millions of non productive PMs. Now they want to fix the menace by employing architects. The day of the PM seems to be over at least for now.
Hands on experience in must to clear both rounds. Some amt of design experience helps. Please prepare a 'problem solving' case study from one of your projects where you have been a tech lead. Complexity of the project and team size does not matter. Its only articulation that matters.
Negotiation Details
HR tried to be smart. Did not realize everyone knew Nasscom provides details of appraisals in companies etc. Claimed to have 'inside' contacts in my org regarding my appraisal details etc. Little bit hard bargaining needed to get what you want. Plan your strengths and weakness while negotiating. I will not say this is bad. At this level one has to be competitive negotiator as well. Remember, the wittiest wolf of the pack gets maximum blood from the hunt.

The company visited our campus and started off with a presentation explaining the profile and what the company actually does. soon after it took a written test consisting of reading comprehension, data interpretation, c++ and analytical questions. After clearing the written test the shortlisted candidates had to fill up a form asking about their details including marks and then they had to sit for an interview consisting of 2 interviewers. In the interview they asked the usual resume based interviews and c++ programs.

HCL wants a lot of people... mostly what they look for is that u have to be interested in the job. They question u in your area of interest and look at how much u know. they also ask about u r domain preference. if u confident enough u will sail through...
