"Had I ever found myself dealing with a subordinate who was unable to perform their work satisfactorily and how did I handle that. Also, what did I learn from that?"

I gave them the opportunity to improve themselves. I wrote out a personal improvement plan which had clear goals and timelines. The was reviewed and approved by my manager and HR. Ultimately I had to terminate the employee because this person was unable to improve to the degree necessary to do the job.
I learned that it is best to identify the issue as quickly as possible and take the proper steps to correct the situation. Putting off the obvious is not good for anyone and it is best to "get on the problem" if someone is unable to do their job satisfactorily.
