Interviewed Feb 2012 in Austin, TX (took a day)
Three Half Price Books employees were in the room when I interviewed. The mood was light and informal. The hardest question I was asked was, "How do you define customer service?" They also asked how I deal with stress, to tell them something about myself that was not on my application, basic stuff like that.

Interviewed Dec 2008 (took 2 days)
I only have one interview with the store manager. He was very friendly. Like other ppl on this site have said, just be yourself and answer all questions honestly. That's the only way you'll make it at the store. They have to make sure that you're personality will mesh with everyone else's or it'll be bad news/

Interviewed Jun 2008 (took a day)
The store had a sign up and I filled out an application. They only promote from within, and seniority is not a factor. Interpersonal compatability is the most important factor.
Let the interview be as natural and as true to your personality as possible, otherwise you may get the job and end up quitting because you just don't fit in with the group.
This company allows dating between employees including managers and entry-level, and there is a lot of after hours socializing since it is permitted.
Do not try to push credentials or education level. The company website states that there is not a single degree at the corporate offices. The way to get hired, promoted, or stay employed is your ability to maintain within the social circle at the store. So be friendly and personable.
