    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through an employee referral – interviewed at Hawaii State Department of Education.

    Interview

Interview was very brief. It seemed more like a "talk story" session than an interview. It was low-key, casual, and kick back. The individual conducting the interview did most of the talking.

    Interview

There is no real "interview." The candidate signs up at the Department headquarters in Wailuku, takes a deliberately impossible-to-fail exam, and is granted a subbing license good for five years.

    User Support Technician Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Honolulu, HI
    Accepted Offer
    Positive Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Hawaii State Department of Education (Honolulu, HI) in July 2012.

    Interview

Hear about job opening, meet with principal and/or vice principals. Questions are basic, scripted, straight from the State's job posting. Read this ahead of time and you can easily practice for the technical side of the interview but it just comes down to personality. They ask if you're OK with working overtime without pay. You're expected to be there during your hours to support staff and students. I got the job immediately and started the following Monday.

    Interview Questions

    • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?   1 Answer

    Negotiation

There is no negotiation as this is a State job, assigned a pay schedule of BU03 - White Collar non-supervisory SR-15.

Routine, standardized questions--look online to prepare. Schools have legal requirement to interview everyone. Study the standards. Know about common core and classroom management. At least two people will interview you. One may be VP or department head

    Application

I applied online. The process took 12+ monthsinterviewed at Hawaii State Department of Education (Kailua, HI) in March 2011.

    Interview

The process took over a year and a half. The secondary interviews were all done by panels of school staff (teachers, principal, vice principal) - be aware that these panels do not have your detailed information. Bring references, resume, etc. to these interviews!

    Interview Questions

    • All questions were typical for a teaching position. Be prepared to answer questions about new programs in education (I'd try to talk with a teacher at the school beforehand to see what's new), as well as "Common Core" standards.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

    No negotiations in education!

    Secondary Teacher Interview

    Interview

Application starts with either paper or online application.
Highly recommended that you seek out a school in need who can pull your application from the hiring pool, otherwise you may wait a LONG time to be contacted.
The principal will likely do their own interview, however there is a pre-written interview that is pass/fail that it done with district personnel.

    Interview Questions

    • Do you think that students are not as motivated to learn as the used to be?   1 Answer

    Negotiation

I had already been offered a job by the school, this was a technicality to get me on the state payroll. No salary negotiation since it is a union payscale job.

I applied online. The process took 4+ monthsinterviewed at Hawaii State Department of Education in January 2007.

    Interview

I completed an online application and sent transcripts as supporting documents. The job application has a lot of essay questions to assess different skills. The interview process is very thorough.

    Interview Questions

    • Nothing was really unexpected. This is an example of a question you should prepare for.

What is your experience with case planning?

    Negotiation

This is a government agency so the salary and conditions of hire are not negotiable. It is also in a very desirable location where people want to live.
