Interviewed Mar 2011 in Bangalore (India) (took a day)
The interview was a technical one. They mainly asked in detail about the B.Tech major and mini projects. To some of my friends they also asked about the experiments they did in labs.
After the interview i was selected and we had a meeting of selected people. They told they were mainly checking the methodology in which we solved a question they asked. Also they wanted us to have in-depth knowledge of application of our project. They told they were not much concerned about our language skills. Even if some of our answers are wrong, they will throw us some clues on how to correct it and they will select people who are willing to take these clues will get selected.
They also emphasized this is a job in which we are going to serve the nation. They are much concerned about practical application of what we study, that's why more importance to projects i guess.

Reason for Declining
HAL has a 6 year bond for design trainees!!! I enquired to some HAL employees. Most people said if you have got a good offer somewhere else its better to join there. It might be interesting to work with planes,helicopters etc. initially, but gradually it will become a routine job and your interest declines. Also the promotion and salary rise are time bound and doesn't depend much on your performance. Also this is a huge company, a typical PSU, so you cant expect much recognization. If you need to reach a good position you will need to work in the company continuously for 20-25 years. Also if you land up in a section in which you are interested, then its good for you. Otherwise you may not enjoy your work, because its not so easy to change between sections. It may be good in the long run, if you don't have any other ambitious plans in next 10 years.

I got the interview through a College or University and the interview consisted of a Group/Panel Interview.
