Interviewed Feb 2011 (took a day)
Fairly straight forward hiring process. Begins online with basic info, skills, personality test, and basic IQ check. If that all checks out, a call center will call, ask a few more questions and verify info. Of course, if that all goes well, the HR at the store will call to schedule interview. Interview also fairly simple. Either the department manager will interview if they are available, if not the next manager in line will, if they aren't available, the HR manager will interview. If initial interview goes well, you will interview with the store manager. If that goes well you will be given directions to drug test and schedule orientation. As far as the attitude they're looking for, I'd say "Motivated" and "Self Starter" (As in you don't need a manager around to keep you working.) would be things to keep in mind.

Negotiation Details
As a non skilled or sales position, I wasn't given the opportunity to negotiate. If interviewing for a skilled/sales position you may be able to negotiate to 3-5% above lowest expected rate, based on previous experience/skills and of course how well the interview went.
Other Details
I Applied Online and the interview consisted of a Phone Interview, a 1:1 Interview, a Drug Test and a Background Check.

Interviewed Aug 2011 (took 1 week)
I applied online at the careers website, and got an email stating I would recieve a phone interview. The phone interview was short, asked why I wanted to work there and why I applied for the position I did, and then gave a salary and asked if I was okay with it, and I said yes. Just say you love the environment and give some phony boloney reason for the position, don't say "Cuz it was available" or "Cuz I need a job", say something along the lines of "I think I would be a perfect fit given my skill set". I was told to go to a store interview a week later, I was given a few panel questions, then given a brief interview with the store manager, who asked about me, who I am, why I feel I belong there, was very friendly. I was offered the job on the spot, completed a drug test and waited for an orientation call.

Negotiation Details
I was asked if a salary was ok, I just said yes because I was desperate for employment and didn't want to be turned down over a dispute. Beggars can't be choosers.

Interviewed Sep 2011 in Brooklyn, NY (took 2 weeks)
it starts off with the little online test, then depending on what place or what psoition, they'll give you that
the phone interviiew, i believe was just 2 questions, what are your skills and why you want to work here, (those aren't the exact questions, this was 2 weeks ago, my memory sucks) after that they/ll give u an automated call to schedule a 1 on 1 interview.the questions they asked was, what was my past experience and how to deal with irate (mad) customers. the interviewer seemed to only be paying half attention, i think the 1on1 was actually just a in person job summary.the drug test was a pain in the ass, but thats because i had to go on a saturday.
after 2 weeks, ive gotten no response from them.

Interviewed Jun 2010 in Harlingen, TX (took 4 days)
Received a call from Atlanta about 3 weeks after applying online. A phone interview of about 3 questions was conducted without notice. Referred my interview schedule to the Harlingen Home Depot, which was about three days after the phone interview.
The one-on-one interview was rather informal; I was interviewed by the operations manager. He read about 10 questions from a script, with questions that ask you to recall instances in past work, volunteer, and education experiences that display work ethics, strengths, and weaknesses pertinent to the questions. Then you play a sales associate in a role-playing scenario where the interviewer is a customer. He asked about making a doghouse. The operations manager acted informally.
At the end of the interview, I was told there was a new hiring system that The Home Depot had just adopted, and that they weren't sure when I would be called, and that I probably would be called from Atlanta headquarters. I haven't been called since; it has been 5 days.
