Applied online, was called the next day and given a number, received another phone call with a brief interview (2 questions) about how I had handled certain situations in previous jobs, received another call to interview at store, interviewed with Asst. Interviewed Nov 2009 in Stockton, CA (took 3 days)
Initially screed in a telephone interview by local HR person and invited to meet face to face. Interviewed by HR person and third interview set with Store Manager. Store Manager told me that he did not think I would be a good fit because of my education and experience. In short, over-qualified.

Interviewed Mar 2008 in Nashville, TN (took a day)
Basically, Home Depot only accepts applications online. I don't how they determine who gets picked. I suspect the database spits out candidates to be called. So it's better to include as many locations that you can work at when filling out the application because it increases your chances of getting a call, and if you do get the call, even if it may not be the store you want, if you really want to work at HD, you may really want to consider taking it because you may not get another call for awhile. You can always transfer later. (You'll have to wait 6 months I believe)
I've been at HD for 3 years. I started as an associate. Don't know how they determine new Specialist candidates.

There was no interview really, I had spent enough time learning the position. Everyone knew I could do the job, but because of the economy, on top of a policy change of not offering pay raise with title, they said they couldn't offer me more money. I was told I made more as an associate than what the entry level specialist makes. Which is frustrating because I was still playing by the "old rules". If I knew about the new rules, I would've taken the title as soon as I moved to the specialty department, instead of actually trying to learn the position and become competent BEFORE applying for the specialist position.

Interviewed Jan 2007 (took a day)
I applied for the position with the company at a new location before the building was open to the public, did the interview about two week before grand-opening, everything went find the HR manger offered me several positions and I accepted the one of sales specialist. Training was a week long and real boring.

Interviewed May 2007 (took 2 days)
Applying to work at The Home Depot is a relatively pain-free process. Upon applying online, you will usually be asked to come in for a sit down interview within a few days. Depending on the availability of open positions, many people are asked in to interview the next day. The interview process is simple, you will usually be asked 3-5 questions upon which your responses will be rated on a scale from one to five. Interviews tend to have a structured approach, but may vary based on the person conducting the interview. Expect to be asked to participate in role playing, although some interviewers opt not to take that approach.
Don't expect to be grilled upon the minutia of you personal life, but be ready to pass both a background test and a drug test upon hiring. Depending on the amount of time your drug and background tests are passed, expect to receive an offer within a few days.

Negotiation Details
Often times, new recruits are offered a position other than what they may have applied for initially. This happens for two main reasons: 1. There is an immediate need to fill a position. 2. Based upon your interview, HR dept. determines that it would be in your best interest based on your personality, qualifications, etc. to offer you a different position.
If you have a specific position that you're interested in and don't feel comfortable in any other type of position, just be firm in your intentions and you will usually be offered the position that you ask for.
Don't go in expecting to make top dollar wages initially. You will most likely be offered a reasonable wage, but the Home Depot HR department isn't known for shelling out excessive amounts of money during initial hiring. My advice to any interested applicant is to not fret about a low starting wage. New hires are automatically given a raise following a three month prohibitive period. After that, expect an annual raise based on your date of hire. My experience with the Home Depot is that the raises are often generous if you perform well.
Bottom line: If you do your job well, Home Depot will take care of you.
