Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 2 weeks)
I had an on-campus interview and was brought back for a super day. The super day consisted of 6 interviews with various associates, VPs, directors and MDs and a 60 minute test. Most interviews were 50/50 fit/technical, although at one interview was purely technical and one interview purely behavioral. Study your financial statements for the test. The interviews were very casual and I got a good impression from people who work at HL.

Interviewed Jan 2011 (took 2 months)
Seemed to be a very informal process. The interviews played more like conversations than strict interviews. First round 2 interviews, very casual and mostly fit with some minor technicals. Second round 5 interviews, all very technically complex.

Interviewed Jan 2012 (took a day)
Only received a first round interview over the phone for the Summer Analyst Internship. Interview was quite technical for a phone round interview with a VP. Only one fit question, the rest were all moderately technical questions focusing in detail on the various financial statements, valuation metrics, etc. The interviewer also focused on my previous experience in DCF and other valuation and asked me to walk through it.

The interview consisted of a Phone Interview.

Superday with fit-competency based questions, then interviews which where of technical nature. Emphasis on technical skills, including valuation methods of different companies and according to industry. You should be confident and skilled with financial accounting and corporate finance techniques. One advice is to stay calm during the whole process and do not rush to a conclusion, better take some seconds to think. This is an important trait they are looking for, since Investment Banking is a high pressure job and at the same time attention to detail is required. Also, be genuine and honest in your replies. From all the interviews I had attended it was the hardest one, but fortunately I had prepared well.

Interviewed Sep 2011 in London, England (United Kingdom) (took a day)
Strong focus on valuation and accounting questions. E.g. three ways to value a company, which one is better, which one will produce the highest valuation. What are the problems with using comparable transactions from 10 years ago. Asked a lot about the basics of the balance sheet. EV formula. What happens to equity as EV falls. What happens in a bankruptcy situation. Pecking order of creditors, etc.
