Administrative Services Coordinator at Humana

No Offer – Interviewed in Honolulu, HI May 2013 – Reviewed May 16, 2013 New

Interview Details – I applied online on a Saturday and got an email Tuesday to set-up a phone interview with the recruiter. The interview was set the next day. The call from the recruiter came late but she apologized for it. The phone interview lasted around 20 minutes. The recruiter first gave an overall description of the position, explaining the duties and responsibilities in full details. She then asked me if I am still interested with the role. When I said "yes", she went on and started with her questions. All the questions where situation questions. "When was a time you..." and you have to discuss your experience. After every question, there's an awkward silent for about a minute, I guess the recruiter is taking down notes. She asked around 7 or 8 questions before it was my turn to ask her.

I asked her some questions about the position but didn't got the answers I wanted. She gave me an explanation of something else instead. This position is practically being an administrative assistant to all the sales agents (both internal and external). I asked the recruiter about how many sales agents am I going to serve and she couldn't give a number, not even an estimate. After the interview, the recruiter told me she'd forward my application to her hiring manager and I should expect a call or email within the next few days.

The "next few days" stretched into weeks. When I didn't heard anything back in a week, I emailed the recruiter for an update. She replied and said she's have the answer in a few more days. Two weeks after the phone interview, I got the rejection letter.

Interview Question – Nothing unexpected. All where the generic "When was a time you..." questions.   Answer Question

Clinical Advisor/Chart Review Nurse at Humana

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in San Juan, PR Feb 2013 – Reviewed Mar 11, 2013

Interview Details – I applied in D.ec before xmas. I got an email that involved interview questions from corporate recruiter maybe around mid January. We then played phone tag for the next 3-4 weeks. We never were able to have the phone interview. Finally my local recruiter from the building I would be working at called me stating she had my resume on her desk and would like to set up an interview with the lead Doctor and head nurse, she stated she would have to get back to me. She ended up getting back to me 1 week later, finally 4 days after that I had my first and only interview with the lead doctor and nurse. Interview went amazing, yes I felt very nervous having 2 people sit down at a desk with their pen and paper taking notes of everything, however they were very humanistic and assured me I had nothing to be nervous about. They were friendly and got to know me a little bit before actual interview began. Interview lasted about 1 1/2 hours and remained quite casual. Interview became a little technical when it came to the clinical questions, however I knew my stuff, thank goodness I did because if i would have gone in there new grad RN I would have looked like an idiot. Doctor stated that he was going to ask me some clinical questions and if i do not answer his question he will ask again in a more complicated different way each time I do not provide the answer he wants. Scared me a little, but I knew my stuff, I almost had to pick up the nurses jaw from the desk, the doctor was asking me for specific doctors orders including labs and medications for certain conditions within the hospital setting, things that a nurse with 1 year of experience rarely are familiar with, but i believe i answered well. Interview ended with them explaining Humana benefits package and them taking copies of my nursing and drivers license. I stated to him I had another offer and how long it would take for them to get back to me if they wanted to onboard me or not, he stated he didn't quite know but that if he gets to corporate fast then they should get back to me within 2 weeks. That was on Thursday, by Tuesday corporate recruiter called with an offer and explained to me that this offer will not be negotiable after corporate approval. Corporate approval took almost 2 weeks, horrible wait. Then by Feb 28th I was given start date for march 18th and began the drug screening/background check.--pretty long process, but what they offer is worth the wait.

Interview Questions

  • 1-An appendectomy is performed, what is now expected by the patient and how long should the patient be admitted to the hospital before discarge?   View Answer
  • How would you describe your current supervisor?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – I was able to negociate the base pay in a way that I make more than what i make at the hospital including shift differencials and floor incentives...Advice to others, before that offer is delivered to corporate, be sure you are clear clear clear to your recruiter about what you want and expect. And make sure you include at all levels from applying to interview process, your salary after all incentives so you dont end up with an offer that makes less than what you actually make at the hospital. they asked me about 4 times what I make at the hospital and i always rounded up after all the incentives

Analyst at Humana

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Louisville, KY – Reviewed Jan 23, 2013

Interview Details – HR has a strict process overseeing how managers hire people in. When a manager posts an opening, HR publishes it on the website and tries to interpret what the manager is looking for. Once HR has some applications they will put together a list of a select few applicants and will forward their resumes to the manager. Note here that HR acts as a gatekeeper at this step and a hiring manager will never see your resume if you have a bad HR screener.

If a manager likes your resume, they will ask for a phone screen, which is pretty easy to get through. **Try to get the names of all the managers and departments whose jobs you're applying to** Next, you'll have a phone interview with the hiring manager, and you should be well prepared for this one. Drop the names of all the departments, managers, and job titles you're applying too. This will give the hiring manager a good idea of the position/type of work you're looking for; they will likely know the people and positions you're talking about.

If you receive an offer from several teams/departments, they'll ask you which one you want to work with. After that, the departments will haggle with each other and you'll receive an offer from one of them. You won't necessarily be offered the position you chose.

All of this will all happen fast. Each step of the process will likely be separated by a period of only a few days. Expect an offer within days of interview. If you don't get an offer, then try to capitalize on the knowledge you've gained of the organizational structure and recognize that it's a big organization with lots of other opportunities.

Interview Question – Each hiring manager is going to be a little different, but HR dictates a lot of the hiring processes. You should expect fairly standard questions, try to give a non-standard response (obviously).   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Entry level analyst. No negotiation. Expect ~ $50k. Consultant level encompasses a wider range of talent is more reasonable to negotiate. A reasonable Consultant salary is ~$60k. They will put a lot of weight on the expected salary you put on your resume. Don't even bother asking for $100k unless you're at a Director or "Strategic Consultant" level.
