Senior Managing Consultant at IBM

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Armonk, NY Sep 2008 – Reviewed Dec 20, 2012

Interview Details – Without much fuss but maybe a bit slower than smaller, more agile companies. Very heavy on in-person interviews to test fit and overall candidate performance. The screening process for my particular position started at the university with a phone interview and closed with a intense 4 interviews in one day session a couple of weeks later. Emphasis is on fit (passion/enthusiasm for the industry and company) and business cases that require some creative thinking and basic understanding of the IBM business model.

Interview Question – Heavy on business cases that are somewhat IBM specific. Reading up on the company's strategy helps and is expected.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Very limited negotiating power. IBM has clout in the industry and uses it. This giant doesn't fall with any individual and will not give in. Will respect market rates though as you can prove them.

Human Resources Intern at IBM

No Offer – Interviewed in Armonk, NY Oct 2012 – Reviewed Dec 16, 2012

Interview Details – Straightforward 1:1 interview on-campus with the recruiter. The recruiter was smooth about asking questions/jumping questions that he thought were redundant after hearing some of my answers. It was a very comfortable 30 minute conversation.

Director at IBM

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Armonk, NY Feb 2010 – Reviewed Nov 23, 2011

Interview Details – The interview was so incredibly long and tedious it wasn't worth it to me. I could feel the tension between colleagues during the interview "hand offs" between one person to the next. The lady who was to be the hiring manager was booted midstream throughout the interview process which took over 2 months. THe new hiring manager was clueless and we started ALL OVER AGAIN. NO THANKS

Tax at IBM

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Armonk, NY Apr 2008 – Reviewed Nov 11, 2010

Interview Details – The interviewing process was very organized and went very smoothly.

In one day, I was interviewed by 5 people.

Self confidence is key, but showing a willingness to work before all else in life is also useful.

Negotiation Details – I was able to negotiate. The interviewers didn't know anything about their relo package even though I had flown in for the interview from halfway across the country.

I had another offer so IBM had to decide quickly. I think that helped a lot since the hiring manager normally took several months to decide on candidates. Not too unexpectedly a lot of the good ones were gone by the time a decision was made.

Market Insights Segement Analyst at IBM

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Armonk, NY Aug 2009 – Reviewed May 2, 2010

Interview Details – The hiring process started rather informally, with dicussions between a recruiter and then a hiring manager. After passing these hurdle, I went to the company for two, in-person interviews with Market Insights Directors. One interview was strictly behavioral. The other was a case interview based on a recent project conducted within the department.

Interview Question – How would you hand [this] problem?   Answer Question

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Armonk, NY Dec 2008 – Reviewed May 5, 2009

Interview Details – The interview process at IBM is laborious. I have never had to complete so many interviews when applying to a company.

Reason for Declining – IBM requires that new employees remain in or around Armonk for up to 2 years. I am looking to work in a different geography.
