Staff Software Engineer Interview

Staff Software Engineer

I applied through an employee referral and the process took a day - interviewed at IBM.

Interview Details – Was referred by employee. Had 4 interview rounds after phone interview. Had tricky C questions , C data structures , string operation programs etc, networking related : TCP states. There was main focus on C programming skills with the ability to problem solving. I like these interviews compared to Google's because Google asks questions which may not even be related to the work you will be doing!

Interview Question – Dont remember exactly but one was related to C printf arguments & other one on TCP SYN ACK states and sequence numbers   Answer Question

I applied through an employee referral and the process took a day - interviewed at IBM in February 2012.

Interview Details – I did not have one, as I had previously interned and was basically offered the job given my previous experience. Usually one manager will do all the hiring for an area and do the initial screening, followed by conference calls with the team that is actually doing the hiring

Interview Question – They were more interested in myself as a person than my technical abilities that I had already proven through internships with IBM   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at IBM in December 2009.

Interview Details – Initial contact was a phone screening interview. Several days later I was contacted to be interviewed by several technical personel and given a short skills assessment test. The screening interview consisted of general questions about my current resume, career path, and what I was looking for in a job and work environment. The technical interview consisted of more specific questions about particular skills and how I would rate various skill sets from 1 to 10. A short skills test consisting of a series of questions focused on skills required for the job.

Interview Question – What is the difference between an object and a class in java?   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – Pay and amount of time required for on-call duties.

The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at IBM in January 2007.

Interview Details – Pretty boring, straightforward behavioral questions with very little technical depth. The culture was pretty professional and stuffy, not a place where younger people would be interested in working. The manager was not technical and the technical staff was not that skilled. I would personally think it is hard to get top technical talent and filter them out with these interviews
