dump 3 of the five gallons into the smaller container. Dump the 3 gallons out. Then dump the remaining 2 gallons into the three gallon container. Fill the 5 gallon, dump one gallon into the 3 gallon and then you have 4. Tada

1. Fill up the 3 gallon container and pour all of it into the 5 gallon container.
2. Fill up the 3 gallon container again and pour all of it into the 5 gallon container until the 5 gallon container is completely filled. This will yield 5 gallons in the 5 gallon container and 1 gallon remaining in the 3 gallon container.
3. Dump out the 5 gallons in the 5 gallon container.
4. Pour in the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon container into the 5 gallon container.
5. Fill up the 3 gallon container and pour it into the 5 gallon container.
6. You will now have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container.
