Interviewed Aug 2008 (took 1 week)
The process took about a week in total. The hiring manager simply asked questions about my experience and why I wanted to work at the company. The managers are incredibly friendly and the process was relatively simple.

Interviewed Mar 2010 in Hanover, MD (took a day)
Got a callback promptly from an employee. Interview was the following week. It was a little disorganized, mainly because the store had just opened. I had to fill out my application in the dressing room because there was no room, and my interview was in a little corner of the dressing room area because the office was messy. Overall the interview was good. My interviewer was really nice, and only asked me one real question, "What do you like about J.Crew"? That was easy for me to answer because I love their clothes and shopping. She asked me about my schedule. And then told me there would be a background check. I probably didn't get the job because I have no retail experience. But it was one of the best interviews I have been on.

Interviewed Oct 2009 (took 2 days)
I walked in to see if they were hiring any sale associates and they proceeded to give me an application to complete. When I finished and returned it to the store manager(s), they asked for a moment. They asked a few straight forward question regarding why I wanted to work their and then they scheduled an interview the following day, pretty efficient. Not sure if it just corporate protocol or not.

Interviewed Jul 2009 (took 2 days)
I walked in to J. Crew and asked if there were any open positions or applications available. I was given an application, but was told to complete it outside. After turning in my application, I was asked by the manager to attend a group interview, which took place in a location outside the store. There were seven other candidates with me. The manager met us, spoke about how the position was part time, and that the position should be seen as supplemental income - not to pay bills or rent or anything serious like that. Hours could not be guaranteed, but as long as a candidate was available one was likely to get scheduled. Simple questions were asked of each person, going in order from one side of the table to the other, such as "Why do you want to work for J. Crew?" and "Describe a time you provided good customer service for someone." After the group interview, I met with the Store manager, who asked me the same questions, and had some additional questions based on my resume. Shortly after I was called and was offered a position in sales.

Negotiation Details
No negotiation available. The mangers were explicit that while they *did* need to hire more associates to cover hours, it was because the current associates couldn't cover all current hours, *not* because they didn't have enough associates. Management mentioned twice that they have "too many people and not enough hours to give."
Other Details
The interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview and a Group/Panel Interview.
