Interviewed Sep 2010 in San Antonio, TX (took a day)
After placing an application with human Resources, you are offered a position, once you accept the position a background check is processed. Once the background check clears there is a 4-12 week training course that you must attend to learn your job duties in order to take and pass an exam that is given by the Internal Revenue service to become licensed as a paid Tax Preparer. This will be paid by you and you will be reimbursed upon completion of the tax season along with a bonus based on the number of returns you prepare for clients and the amount of the returns. This amount is on a scale and you can receive up to 10% of the amount you personally made the company during that tax season. If you follow up and work in the next season you qualify for a 25% raise.
Negotiation Details
There is no negotiation period you either accept the position and follow the course and work during that season or you choose to not take the position.
Other Details
The interview consisted of a Background Check.

Interviewed Feb 2011 (took a day)
I walked into the store and said I wanted to work there. They were ecstatic (as they needed someone). I told them I had experience doing taxes and they had me fill out an application. I then dropped it off at thier district office. A few days later, the District called to verify some information (birthday, last name, etc). A few days after that the manager of the store branch (where I had walked in) called and asked me when I could start. It was very ad-hoc and I was in the dark for most of the time.

Interviewed Dec 2009 (took a day)
There was no real interview. We just had to do well on the practice problems using J&H software. It was time consuming at first because it is so detailed. Once you get through the problems it actually becomes easier when working with a client''s tax return one on one.
The management team is helpful and eager to help all of us succeed in producing accurate returns. The team leaders and store managers are easy to work for as it is a second job for all of us, so there is no need for them to nit pick on how you do the job. There is always someone you can reach out to if you come across a weird situation. Once you pass your training your on your own.
The tax program they have developed is very helpful because it includes questions for you to ask if things seem out of the ordinary. There is also an organized list of resources for which to do research any tax topic.

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Logan, UT (took a day)
I had already worked for them the year before but had to interview again. This time I was brought in and sat down they weren't going to be freezing the salaries and everything. They asked a lot of questions on my background in tax and if I was planning on doing it for awhile. I seemed generally interested and they gave me the chance to take the classes and advanced courses which were quite in depth about every tax code there is; well within the clients that we cater to. Work culture is pretty laid back but we definately aim to impress.

The interview was very informal. The owner was very nice and put you at ease. The office people seemed very nice too. Since working with them they have continued their very laid back culture that I have come to enjoy.

Not much to say about interview process. Typical for the field and not really that difficult. It really depends on your area and who the owner of the franchise is or if it is corporate owned.
