Interviewed Mar 2010 in Chicago, IL (took 2 days)
Interview process is tough. BUT worth it. I got the job, but that was back in 2007. By the time I was leaving the company I heard it was even more difficult to work for Hardie then when I applied. James Hardie is a very numbers driven, exclusive, high price point building product. The Interview was in 4 steps:
1. Recruiter/phone interview
2. Panel/Group Interview
3. 1:1 Interview
4. All of you testing.

Salary is about it. Honestly that's about the only thing you will need to ask for more of.
Everything is you will get:
Company Car (really nice car), Cell phone, Laptop, gym membership, free lunch fridays, amex card, printer, work from home, 3 weeks off for holiday, work/life balance, cadillac of health benefits, tutiton reimbursment, stock options, fedex account...honestly you get the works if you make it through. Really enjoyed working for James Hardie.

The interview process was intense. They have you do a wonderlik test as well as personality test. Then they have you do round-robin interviews with 3 sets of 3 VPs, managers, and HR associates before an offer is made.

Interviewed May 2011 in Raleigh, NC (took 4 weeks)
Phone interview first, lasted about 30 minutes describing job and culture at James Hardie. Basic behavioral questions, ability to work in entrepreneurial environment. Scheduled follow up interview locally with other management. Interview at hotel, got a phone call early to push interview back 30 minutes due to late arrival of second interviewer. Arrived 10 mins early, there was another person interviewing (so they pushed me off to fit someone else in, not late flight). Basic interview questions, interviewer expects you to control their attention as you would if meeting with client. Interviewer was distracted with another issue, this may have been intentional to see how you react to presenting to someone who isn't 100% focused on you as could be the case in day to day activities in the job. Position ended up not being a good fit to my experience and personality

Interviewed May 2010 in Fontana, CA (took a day)
People were dressed very unprofessionally. Some interviewers spoke broken English and were hard to understand. Seemed to care a lot about the hours you spend at work.

Interviewed Apr 2010 (took 3 days)
After several phone inerviews, I was notified that I would need to travel halfway across the country for a series of panel interviews. The office appearance and staff dress code was very unprofessional; blue jeans and t-shirts.
After enduring their process all morning, I was told that I would hear from them "either way" within 24-48 hours; I have never heard anything.

Interviewed Oct 2008 in Mission Viejo, CA (took 2+ weeks)
James Hardie Building Products is a dynamic company focused on growth. When people speak of fast-paced, this company sets the bar. It is full of very smart people and approaches markets unlike any other building product company. So know whether you can handle pressure. If you thrive in that, this is the company for you.

Tough at negotiation. Know what you want. If they can make you sway, they will. remember that the person that can stay quiet the longest and is OK with walking out of the room will win.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Savannah, GA (took 3 days)
I was contacted by the hiring manager at JH and passed his phone screen and was sent on to a phone interview with the hiring manager. They were looking for someone very numbers detailed and not so much into relationship building. The initial manager I talked to made it seem that it was more of a relationship building position, than a hunter position, so I focused on those abilities in my second interview. During which I learned that it was actually more of a chasing numbers job and they didn't really care about my abilitiy to build a relationship with my clients.

Interviewed Mar 2010 (took 2 weeks)
James Hardie started by contacting me from an internal recruiter. I did a phone screen with about 2 hours notice. I guess I passed the phone screen and was set up to meet locally with the person who's job was available (he was moving for promotion). A really nice informal meeting. The Wonderlic test was administered.
I was then flown to another city to do a panel interview. There were interviewing lots of people from all over the place. There were three separate 30 minute panel interviews with 3-4 people in each room. It was brutal. They kept saying that their company was "direct and aggressive" and they weren't kidding.
