No Offer – Interviewed in Englewood, CO Dec 2008 – Reviewed Mar 18, 2009
Interview Details –
First you apply on line and hope they contact you. I have been applying for jobs there for over 2 years and I got my first contact Dec 2008.
A recruiter for the company called and asked me some questions. He asked if I knew Unix and I told him I start classes in Jan. He said that was ok--it shouldnt be a problem.
(Just a note: the initial job description did NOT say anything about Unix.)
Then he emailed me all the forms and job app to complete and return to him--preferrably before the interview. He scheduled the face to face interview the following week.-- (approx 8 days)--after he rcvd my paperwork, which I got to him by the end of the same day I rcvd the documents via email. He also told me I would be interviewing with 2 of the managers. (I like the heads up!)
When I went for my interview, everyone was very, very nice and personable. The recetionist had me sign in, gave me a visitor badge, took my coat and called the recruiter.
The recruiter was very friendly and asked me a few additional questions as he lead me to the confernece room to where I would interview with 2 other managers. The conference room had a round table so it more comfortable than sitting at a square table. It felt more personal than stuffy.
When I met the interviewers they asked if it was ok if a 3rd manager interviewed with us as well as he was a new manager and if not that was ok. Of course I said it was ok. All three of them were really nice and did not make me feel uncomfortable in anyway.
They did Round Robin of questions and at one point asked me about Unix which I told them that I had told the recruiter I have no experiance to date with Unix, but I start classes in January to get my Unix Certificate. They said that was great. During the interview, they made comments like: "that's great", "perfect", "nice". I felt it was a very postive interview.
At the end of the interview, they all shook my hand and one of the managers walked me out to the reception area and said they would contact me either way on the final decision. They had 2 other interviews to do.
I immediately sent a Thank You via email to both the recruiter and the managers for their time when I got home that same day.
Two days later, the recruiter left me a voice mesage and sent me an email followup to the voice message that they had made a decision to hire someone else within the company.
I called the recruiter to ask what I could have done better in my interview. He said they really were looking for someone with Unix experiance and the person they hired within had more experiance with Unix.
So, between you and me: I was seriosly annoyed that my time and gas was wasted (hello? unemployed means I have to watch my pennies and gas isnt cheap!) when from the start they
(a) wanted Unix experiance --which was not only listed in the job description but the recruiter said it was ok that I didnt know Unix at the moment and
(b) if they were interviewing from within in the company why bother to list the postion? Why not just check out the internal candidates first and only list the job if the internal applicants dont qualify. (that is sooooooo annoying, time consuming and a waste of time for everyone!!)
So, other than I felt a tad bit put out with my time, I was really, really hoping to get that job though!!! The company is well known and settled with long term history and everyone that I had contact with had just been so personable.
