Interviewed Aug 2011 in Irvine, CA (took 2 weeks)
I was referred to KPMG by a director at the Irvine, CA location. I was interviewing for an Audit Associate position, level 1 - very entry level. I already have 3 years work experience so I was not sure if I was the right candidate for the position but I wanted to get my foot in the door at a big public accounting firm. I was first reached out to by a recruiting agency that KPMG utilizes, standard pre-screening process to review information on my resume to make sure I fit the candidate profile. I was told I would be contacted by an in house recruiter and I was in just two days. Set up my in-house interview with one partner and one audit manager. The interview went really well! I got a long with the partner and we had a nice flowing conversation - mainly went over my resume, my college experience and then it turned into light, fun conversation. The manager was a bit more dry - he didn't really give me a chance to sell myself as he was too busy talking about how demanding the job was and if I could handle it. He did mention that I had a competitive edge over other people being considered for the position as most of them were college graduates with no work experience. I felt very confident after my interview. One week passed and I did not hear anything back. I wrote to the recruiter who set up my interview to see what the average turnaround time was. He did not respond. I called him the next day. He did not respond. Two weeks passed and I emailed both the partner and the manager I interviewed with to ask them the same questions...average turnaround time and that I hadn't heard any feedback? No response. So I called the inhouse recruiter again. He finally responded and said he would have another recruiter call me asap, as his position was only to set up the interview. A day later, a recruiter from Seattle called me to tell me that the HR/recruiting dept in So Cal has been swamped and that's why they haven't been able to get back to me. So Cal team had to call recruiters from Seattle to come down to help them...anyway, with that said, he mentioned that they actually closed hiring for the position as they were only focusing on hiring senior audit associates at this point. He said to check the website as there are two audit associate positions open - one entry level and one senior - and they were only interested in senior now. Thanks....why didn't you tell me this when you guys figured that out?! I waited 2 weeks to hear this...
All-in-all, initial set up of interview was very professional and everyone was more than helpful and friendly. Post interview - very unprofessional in following up. My advice to anyway who wants to get into Big 4 - do it right out of college when they come to your campus to recruit!!! That's the easiest way in!!

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Irvine, CA (took 1 week)
I had two 1:1 interviews by a manager and a senior manager. Felt good about both interviews, no tough questions, conversations flowing well, and I did like both of the interviewers. They kept smiling to me, and so I assumed they liked me as well (You should never assume that).
However, when I almost felt 100% positive, I got a rejection letter. Other than feeling very disappointed, I was a bit pissed by getting the email said " we couldn't offer you the internship at this moment", "please consider to apply a full-time position". Dude, I was applying a full-time position?? Speechless...wondering how much do they care about people? Even to those who didn't win this time, we should always maintain a relationship. That's very important as being public accountants!
I did like a few people in the office and made a really good connection with them, but maybe sometimes a group of nice people doesn't represent the firm's culture. I don't believe I have seen the real face of everybody there.
My suggestion is to keep your options open. Always. And now I am extremely excited about going to the place where really belongs to me!

We had a pre-interview social the night before the interview to get to know our interviewers. I had a greeter as I came in to make me feel comfortable before the interview and had behavior type questions.
