Interviewed Nov 2009 (took 3 weeks)
Stage 1: Online Application.
Stage 2: Aptitute testing
This is a SHL type test assessing the candidate's verbal, numerical and diagrammatical reasoning skills.
It is done online, not at the employer's premises.
Stage 3: Whole day assessment centre
Kicked off with a briefing from HR. They are nice, warm and friendly.
First up, in-tray exercise - this is a simple case study testing your ability to extract the relevant details from a pile of information and your communication skills. You are required to sit at a computer and sort through a few emails to prepare a summary or value proposition for a client. This is a 20 minute task, I believe.
Next, two one-on-one interviews. I interviewed with a partner from international tax and a director from corporate tax. Behavioural questions, all focussing on KPMG core values. Although I found the interviewers somewhat intimidating at the start (given their titles), it is easy to build rapport with them as they are very approachable people.

Interviewed Oct 2007 in Atlanta, GA (took 2 days)
There were 2 rounds of interviews - campus interview and office visit. Campus interviewer asked me 4-5 behavioral questions, surrounding the leadership and team-work topics. The office visit took 2 days. They flew me in to Atlanta during afternoon, gave me time to check in the hotel, and took all the candidates to a dinner party. The dinner party was very fancy. The next morning, they divided all the candidates into tax, advisory, and audit groups, give us presentation on the company culture and then held a panel. Afterwards it was lunch with senior managers or partners. Following the lunch it was two rounds of interviews, each 30 mins. There was no behavioral interview question involved.

Interviewed Feb 2007 in Chicago, IL (took 2 days)
Initial phone interview with a recruiter and was invited for Inside Look. Inside Look is a cattle call with a few people interviewing for a full time position mixed in with a bunch of young kids begging for internships. You do stupid exercises where they blindfold you and make people work as a team, etc. One on one interviews with two managers in the practice group I interviewed with who spent most of the time talking about themselves. Amazingly easy process which raised red flags I should have taken note of. This explains how so many less than stellar people get into the firm.

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Houston, TX (took a day)
There was a preinterview dinner the night before the interview. You were sat in small groups and learned about the job which you were interviewing for. It was very casual and were not asked any real interview questions. The next day was the 1:1 interview and it was also laid back. There were greeters outside the interview room to make you feel more comfortable.
