I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Kelly Educational Staffing in September 2012.

Interview Details – Interview and hiring process are straightforward, but there are lots of steps to follow.

Must catch the website during a hiring session and submit an application.

You will be given a date and time to attend an information session, which lasts 5-6 hours. There is a very specific list of documents you need to bring to the information session, and you will be turned away at the door if you are missing even one of these components. Make sure to have everything on the checklist. The information session is otherwise boring and involves presentations about substitute teaching, a few group exercises, etc.

At the end of the information session, you fill out a ton of paperwork, and then everyone waits for short individual interviews. As long as you appear stable, the interview is no big deal.

After that, you need to complete a urine drug test within 24-48 hours and wait for your background check to go through. It takes about a week to hear back from them. If you cleared your drug and background screening, they will schedule you for a training session, which is paid. At this point, you're hired.

You can begin working as a substitute immediately following the training session.

From application to starting work, the entire process takes about a month.

Interview Question – The interview questions are based on simple information from the information session. For example - "When is it appropriate to touch a child?" (Never.) They'll also ask questions like why you think you would be a good substitute teacher.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No salary negotiation. They have set pay rates for different levels of education.

Then the interviewer asked about 5 questions mostly situational circumstances of what one would do in a classroom setting.

Interview Question – I didn't expect to be asked to define professionalism in teaching, however none of the questions were difficult to answer.   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at Kelly Educational Staffing.

Interview Details – The process was well organized, first an application is submitted online, then candidates are called in for processing (I don't remember a personal interview); drug testing is required within 48 hours of the time of the interview, and a background check is run by the state, applicants must complete a one day training session. The training session is very helpful for new substitute teachers with some great tips and advice.

Negotiation Details – No negotiation. There is a standard pay scale. A bit more salary is offered to retired teachers, and to those who go through an additional training program (for which there is a charge)
