Interviewed Sep 2010 in Washington, DC (took 2+ weeks)
The process started with a phone interview. once satisfied, step 2 was a 1 on 1 with DM. Next came an interview with the training store manager. All were fairly personable interview with standard what ifs. I was then given drug testing instructions and when that and background check came back, then I was given an offer

Interviewed Mar 2011 (took 4+ weeks)
First had a phone interview with a recruiter then a skills test online. Then got call from district office to setup interview. Interviewed with a SM and DM. They use structured interview guides with questions they read off. Most are situational in nature....the typical interview questions such as...what have you done to drive sales growth? What would you do in this scenario? What is your management style? etc. They seem easily impressed if you're somewhat intelligent.
There was a long delay between the interview and actual offer, about a month. Once the offer came, I started within a week.

I did not negotiate because I was not in a position to negotiate. I do feel I was low-balled however, and talking to others, you can definitely negotiate up. They're desperate for quality people with solid backgrounds...make them pay for you.

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Ann Arbor, MI (took 2 weeks)
Application process seemed redundant. People actually responsible for doing the interviewing seemed to not know what they were doing nor know how to act in front of strangers. Felt as if they were taking too long with me so they wouldn't have to do actual work.

Reason for Declining
I strongly recommend you visit the store at different times of the day to get a feel for the processes in place or rather out of place. I feel for the people who actually do the work and not the ones you see talking and hiding from their supervisors. I saw one lady in five different places of the store who was trying to work out some freight. By the time I finished walking the store I could tell she was frustrated.

Interviewed Nov 2009 (took a day)
Applied online & received a phone call 6 hours later. Interview was about a week later. You do have to take an online assessment. It is very detailed mathematical questions. Interview was one on one with district manager. Make sure you have a reseume & all paperwork & as the DM went over everything. He explained what he expected & required. A very honest and truthful interview from him. Talk numbers!!! That is what they look at. Money saving, budget, net sales etc... You will need to take a drug test afterword.

I informed them what I wanted. And was told I would get it if I passed the drug & background check. I received 2k more than I asked for. Say you want at least 36K-37K. I received the offer via phone call from his assistant.

Interviewed Aug 2010 in Cedar Rapids, IA (took 2 weeks)
I applied online in response to a listing on an internet job board. I think it was monster or career builder. I received an e-mail from a regional human resources manager and did an interview over the phone. It was basically a "tell me about yourself" interview and discuss salary expectations. Then she asked me to complete an IQ and personality assessment online. The online IQ assessment was mostly situational management questions and reading graphs on department profits and employee metrics/kpi's. The personality test was a basic "are you a good leader" assessment. If you look at the website of the company that does the assessment, you can pretty much figure it out. I think it was Hogan Assessments. Then I received a phone call from the district...I guess I talked to an assistant there about setting up a 1:1 interview and discussed relocation, salary expectation, etc. THEN I met the district manager. He had a script of about four questions and described the training and job. He asked questions like, "tell me about a time you couldn't make a customer happy." Then we talked about salary expectations and he said someone would contact me within a week to tell me either way. I didn't think the interview went exceptionally well, but I received an offer. The whole process took about two weeks.

Well, let me say this, before you give them a number, do some research. My salary expectations were about what I made at my last job as an assistant manager in a small store. However, at this position you are expected to work a lot more hours. They came back several thousand dollars higher than my salary expectations (not including a possible bonus) plus a pretty awesome benefits package. I mean benefits from day one--medical, dental, and all that jazz. I'm just hoping after working all those long hours if I will feel its worth it.

In this economy I didn't negotiate much. With a corporation that is large the benefits will be the same and the salary gives room for advancement.

Interviewed Dec 2008 in Baltimore, MD (took 2 weeks)
Hiring process was simple. I was sent an email, followed by a phone interview and two 1:1 interviews. It was a quick and easy process. Not much to it. I met with the HR recruiter, followed by a store manager. I hear that now they also make you interview with a district manager, however that was not the case when I was hired.
