Software Engineer Interview

Software Engineer
Salt Lake City, UT

I applied through an employee referral and the process took a day - interviewed at L-3 Communications.

Interview Details – The company is very picky in the engineers being hired. Being able to really technically describe your experience is good. My experience is that the HR representative will introduce you to the specific functional manager posting the position, where they will introduce you to their department and give an overview of the work. Afterwards, you are escorted around to various people in the department for individual interviews, usually lasting .5 to 1 hrs. Each individual will feed their assessment of you back to the hiring manager. Anyone that any negative comments from the individual interviewers usually do not get offers.

Interview Question – There was not really any trick or difficult questions. You really get asked about technical things that your resume talks about. Example: How does an IP packet obtain it's MAC address?   Answer Question

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at L-3 Communications.

Interview Details – My interview was short and straight to the point. It only lasted about 30-45 minutes. It was very heavy with tech questions as well as personal experience with examples.

Interview Question – I did not encounter any difficult questions   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – They did not negotiate with me. I told them what I wanted and they countered with what they were going to give me. It was a take it or leave situation.

Very Easy Interview

I interviewed at L-3 Communications in September 2012.

Interview Details – I gave them my resume at a University job fair.
I got the call the next week and the interview was the week after that.

The interview day was with about 20 other new graduates and was very casual.
I interviewed with 3 different people. Each was about 30 minutes.
The questions were easy. Nothing really technical. The people were very nice and I really enjoyed the day of interviews and tours.

The company and I are not really a good fit, so I was not surprised or disappointed when I did not get an offer.

Interview Question – What do you want to do?
Give an example of a challenging problem and how you handled it?
Strengths and weaknesses?

I applied through a staffing agency and the process took 3 days - interviewed at L-3 Communications in December 2011.

Interview Details – Quickest Interview process I've had yet. 4 days from phone call of the recruiter to me accepting the offer!

1) Recruiter calls me, and I express interest (letting him know I already expect an offer from a different company at XXXXX dollars per year).
2) I have a phone call with the Director of Software.
3) I have in-person 1-on-1 interviews with 5 members of the software team.
4) I receive an email offer letter from HR for more money than XXXXX.

Very smooth process.

Interview Question – The interview was more conversational and it was with multiple team members.   View Answer

Negotiation Details – I had another offer and told L-3 what it was. L-3 beat it, and I accepted. Unfortunately, the first company was willing to go much higher after I told them I was going to decline in favor of L-3, but I'm glad I took the position with L-3. I would always recommend negotiating, but I was not willing to pass up the great opportunity!

I applied online and the process took 5 weeks - interviewed at L-3 Communications in May 2011.

Interview Details – I applied on L3Com's website for the position. To my surprise, they called me in for a on-site interview.

The onsite interview was 4 hours long, and I got interviewed by five people.

The first interviewer asked me questions regarding my software engineering background, my reasoning skills with certain logic problems and so forth.

The second interviewer also asked me more technical questions.

The third and fourth interviewers asked me questions as to whether or not I was familiar with various software libraries they used, and the team I would be working on if hired.

The fifth interviewer gave me information on the project I would be working on if hired.

After the on site interview, I received a phone screen the following week with the hiring manager. The interview with him was a combination of all the interview questions and background information from all the individuals from the onsite interview.

Interview Questions

  • Why do you think you'd be a good fit working for L3 communications?   Answer Question
  • Give examples of optimization techniques you would use for a sql database.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – L3 took their sweet precious time in getting back to me regarding an offer or rejection. I normally give companies a week (for small companies) - two weeks(large companies) to make their final decision in the hiring process. It took L3 five weeks. I originally lost hope in them presenting me an offer after the third week.

When I got the offer, I did not try to negotiate as this was the salary range I was looking for.

I applied through college or university and the process took a day - interviewed at L-3 Communications in March 2009.

Interview Details – It was a set of three interviews in a big room at small tables. They ask a lot of information on what type of programs I had worked on at school. Also was question on basic java stuff like print statements and lots basic. I would just review the basic (CSC 120) or focus the interview on a language you are very comfortable with. A friend was ask about pointer so would know the basic.

Interview Question – Just a bunch of random questions about java and unix   View Answer

Reason for Declining – They really didn't do a great job of selling the company to me. They were the third defense contractor i interviewed with and didn't complete. However, I had two friend who did intern there and love it said is was a relax environment and didn't take much to impress.

The process took a day - interviewed at L-3 Communications in May 2009.

Interview Details – I interviewed with the company at school first then they flew me in for an onsite interview. The whole process took a few hours. First met with HR, and then was shuttled through several managers and leads who asked mostly common interview questions and talked about their working environment. There were some questions about generic programming concepts: virtual methods, etc.

Interview Question – What is a virtual method?   View Answer

The process took a day - interviewed at L-3 Communications in April 2009.

Interview Details – I was interviewed by 5 people--the hiring manager, the architect, and three engineers. Only one of the engineers that I spoke to had technical questions for me. The rest were more get-to-know-questions. It seems like it's a crap shoot with defense companies and their interviewing practices. Some just want to know about your experience and some want you to answer technical questions.

Interview Question – What is your college GPA?   Answer Question
