Interviewed Aug 2011 (took 1 week)
All communication is via e-mail, and is automated.
There are two open-book tests:
The first test contains 24 questions relating to the rating rules, as given in their guidebook that you are provided. I have heard that time taken on this test is factored into your score, but I did not have any problems taking less than an hour.
The second test is a skills test, doing actual hands-on work. You are given test questions that match most of the work you will be doing. You are given one week to finish it at your leisure, as it does not need to be completed all in the same session. You find out the results after the 1-week deadline.
Studying for the test is a chore as there are a lot of specific rules on how to answer the questions properly, but it is necessary to the work. It is not as difficult as it seems if you know what you are doing, and you receive credit for partially correct answers.
While the tests are open-book using the guidebook they provide, they even go as far as providing you with a "URL simulator" that will be incredibly useful, as it provides immediate feedback on your ability to do the tasks in the skills test later. Do not pass up the chance to practice with this simulator, it is invaluable and will prepare you for the test!

Interviewed Jun 2010 in Pleasanton, CA (took 2 weeks)
you have a series of two exams. One is fairly simple which consists of 20 questions.. after you pass that - you have a full week to study for "the big one" and it does take a week.... 150 test questions that simulate the actual job tasks ( only 1 )

not in any way. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but it certainly was 90% study/worry and 10% paid work. To me it was not worth it and i was happy when my contract was not renewed.
Other Details
I Applied Online and the interview consisted of an IQ/Intelligence Test and a Skills Test.
