Interviewed Nov 2011 in Buffalo, NY (took 2 months)
First round on campus with a VP. Second round was a full day in Buffalo with a handful of people from my division and HR, as well as a lunch with current MDPs. Also did a third round of phone interviews with managers. Questions were straightforward. They want to make sure you know M&T and will be OK to relocate.

Interviewed Dec 2011 in Buffalo, NY (took 3 weeks)
Initial 30 minute on-campus interview. Went fairly well and conversational.
After 10 days, I was offered a on-site interview at the headquarters in Buffalo, NY. The office visit consisted of 4 half-hour interviews (3 in-person and 1 phone). Overall, the interviews were relatively easy. Questions ranged from general interview questions to behavioral questions. The whole process was finished by noon and followed by lunch with a former MDP, which was informal and very helpful.
The bank seemed well managed with great down-to-earth people.

Interviewed Apr 2011 (took 5 weeks)
Attended information session through university. Bank is highly conservative, disciplined lending. Interviewed for regional sales. Consisted of four one on one interviews plus lunch with incumbent. Program and bank sound great. Unable to comment on complaints of others. Interviews were both behavioral and job related. Questions about resume, activities, education, etc... Looking for an ability to talk to people and relate to them, as well as specific examples of customer service.

Interviewed Dec 2007 in Baltimore, MD (took 3 months)
Interview process starts through your college campus where M&T actively recruits in the Upstate NY and MD areas. Submit your resume and cover letter through your career center and, once screened, you may get the opportunity for a face to face interview with a representative from M&T Bank. If you make it past the first round, you are asked to do a phone interview. After the phone interview, you are flown down to Baltimore or Buffalo for the final round of interviews (at least 3). After the final round of interviews, you are offered a contract and either accept or decline.

Negotiation Details
Did not negotiate. It was a very competitive offer. It is very hard to get in the program so chances of negotiating your salary are next to none. They will probably just tell you they will go to someone on their waiting list. Everyone had the same salary coming in that was an external candidate (slight variations depending on cost of living)
Other Details
The interview consisted of a Phone Interview, a 1:1 Interview and a Background Check.
