Outline
I. Application Process
II. Interview
III. Additional notes
I. APPLICATION PROCESS:
I applied online via the macysJOBS website for Seasonal Sales Associate. The website advises applicants not to contact the store at which they hope to be hired and all correspondences will be done via email. I was concerned that I would be screened out due to my total lack of work experience.
After a week with no response in my email, I went to the location in person and spoke to a manager. I was informed that all hiring is now done through corporate and that they do, in fact, schedule people without experience; however, the manager themselves could do nothing concerning my application until it had been processed by corporate. They told me to continue checking my email.
Not entirely reassured, I later searched for a phone number to contact corporate, but was unable to find one. Through the Contact Us page on macysJOBS, I accessed and submitted an online form that allowed me to add further comments concerning my existing application. A day later I received an email allowing me to schedule an interview. When I accessed the scheduling website I was provided with several options of days and times. I scheduled and confirmed for the next available interview slot which was several days away.
II. INTERVIEW
I dressed in professional attire, made a copy of my resume, and arrived 20 minutes before my scheduled interview time. After 30 minutes of waiting I was called back and interviewed one on one by a manager. At the beginning of the interview I was informed of the position I was being interviewed for-- although I had applied for Sales Associate, I was being interviewed for the position of Replenisher. This was fine by me as I was happy to take any job.
They were very friendly and informative-- answering many questions concerning the organization before I could even ask them concerning responsibilities of the job, the expectations of my availability and attendance, uniform, etc. They did review my resume. The interview was not very structured; the manager did not stick to scripted questions. They did put me at ease.
At the end of the interview I was offered the position and I accepted it. The offer was conditional on the successful completion of a background check and I submitted the required information at the location. I was informed that I might receive an email asking for the same information; if so, I was to disregard it. I did in fact receive this email a day later.
III. ADDITIONAL NOTES
Everyone I encountered at Macy's on the day of my interview and since has been extraordinarily friendly and personable. The culture there is clearly people-oriented.
However, while the hiring process may be streamlined for Macy's by having applications done online and handled through the corporate office, I was discouraged that I could not contact and speak to a living, breathing person.

Interviewed Nov 2011 in Yonkers, NY (took a day)
I applied online and got a response by email immediatly like 2 days later, you schedule your own interview. When I went in for my interview it was very hectic in the office, there were a few other people waiting to be interview before me. There was alot of confusion because the secretary was calling around trying to find someone to interview everyone, after waiting for awhile two people came. After that it went by pretty quickly, out of 6 ppl including myself, only two people left without being offered anything ( so it would seem). I was very nervous when I went, because I didn't have any experience in retail. The lady who interviewed me was nice and understanding, she was very patient with me when I told her I was nervous. She asked Why I wanted to work for Macy's, Did I have any experience in retail (i replied I can always learn), Name a time when you worked in a team and what was it you had to do, Name a time when you had exceptional customer service, She asked me to sell her this blue pen she had ( completley caught me off guard), i got two tries. Also she asked what would you do if you saw someone doing something unethical and if you have ever experienced that. She went over my availability, and ask if I had any questions for her. She went out and checked what positions were opened and offered me a part time seasonal flyer position. I took that. Now Im waiting to be trained. The interview process seemed to me to be a courtesy thing because it didn't look like it matter how you did during the interview process, they practically hired everyone.

Negotiation Details
There was no negotiating pay or anything. It was a take it or leave it option. I would advise you to relax and be yourself, they aren't that strict, they are very understanding of your situation. You don't need a background in retail, you can always be taught what the magic in macy's represent.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Jersey City, NJ (took 4 weeks)
Interview with standard Macy's questions: Why Macy's, Give Example pf Excellent Customer Service, What would you do if you saw another employee doing something wrong
Interviewing Manager was professional, HR staff was not. HR staff schedules traing for new employees, Watch out you may get bumped and your start date gets pushed back because somebody's friend needs your spot. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL - they leave messsages with NO NAME, NO CALL BACK NUMBER. The hiring process needs a close look my Senior Management.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Akron, OH (took 3 days)
After submitting my resume online, I got an email for corporate asking me to schedule an interview at my local Macy's store. They gave options as to what day/time I would like and sent me follow-up emails the day before/day of my interview. I was interviewed by a general manager of the store and she questioned my background in retail as well as the normal behavioral questions one gets in this kind of interview. I was hired for a full-time seasonal position on the spot which I accepted. Overall, just be honest and upbeat with your interviewer, I think that my personality helped me get the job more than my past work experience.

Interviewed Sep 2011 in Visalia, CA (took 2 weeks)
I applied online in the beginning of September, 2011. A week after they called me and asked me to come for an interview. One of the managers interviewed me. Asked me some personal questions first. And then she asked typicall 'Why Macy's' and 'Do you have any costumer service and retail experience' questions. She also asked my availability. That was actually it. She was a very nice person. A few days later they called me to offer the position. It was minimum wage but since it was Macy's and minimum wage was better than no wage I took the job. And I am working there and I am pretty happy.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Salisbury, MD (took a day)
I applied online Saturday night and received an email to schedule my interview Monday morning. I scheduled it for Tuesday at 4:00 pm. I got there 30 minutes early. Someone was speaking with a manager in the back. I assume she was hired, they were speaking of W2 and Orientation. The same woman that spoke to her interviewed me and the interview went great. I started off by asking her how she was and she was so happy to have some one ask how she was, I just knew the interview would be a breeze. She almost wanted to hire me right off the break by just my personality but then she realized she had to ask me the general Macy's interview questions. I answered them and she left for a quick second to see what positions were open. She said there was a position open in cosmetics and she would get the cosmetics manager to speak with me. She said that it shouldn't be a problem but if there was then she would put me with her in jewelry. I met the cosmetics manager and she asked me about my experience and because I work with Mary Kay..it would be a conflict of interest but she liked me so much, she made room for me in Fragrance. I accepted it right away.
HR was very empty when I came in. No one was there. I didn't even know where to go, so I just sat by the computer to apply online. That was awkward. Though, I had a good time. Lasted about an hour. Only because she kept leaving the room. All in all..good experience.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in New York, NY (took a day)
I applied online for a temp. seasonal position and was called in for an interview within a week. I was directed to a site to fill in a time slot for my interview. Went in for the interview and at exactly 10:45 (the time I was scheduled for my interview), my interview took place. My interviewer was a really nice and funny guy and asked me a few questions while telling me some of the things about the company. It lasted about 10 minutes. After that he told me that they would review the applications and reply back next week on whether I got the job or not.
