Interviewed Aug 2011 in Seattle, WA (took a day)
The job I applied for was a retail visual merchandising assistant PT position, but was declined after the 1:1 interview, which I had expected since I come from an IT background and had zero experience with retail and visual merchandising - but I still took a chance! Regardless of the outcome, it was a pleasant and easy interview thanks to the interviewer, who was very friendly, kind, and had put me at ease.
Even though I was not hired for the first position, the interviewer passed along my name to two other merchandising team managers and after two quick 1:1 interviews, I was hired as a merchandising lead (current job). I love my job - yes, I wish it was FT with a better pay, but I can't complain since I'm grateful for getting this opportunity when no other major retailers would give me the light of day.
My only advice for the hiring and interview process is to show ambition, determination, and enthusiasm - they want to see that even if you don't have the experience, you have that desire to show them what you've got and that you have the willingness to learn.

Negotiation Details
No negotiation possible. When you first get yourself involved in retail, you have to expect to receive a small pay, but as you gain more experience and recognition, you cross your fingers and pray that you'll get a promotion or apply for a job that you're now qualified for.

I Applied Online and the interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview and a Phone Interview.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Lanesboro, MA (took 6 days)
Interviewers were not in the office, so someone random took me and this person obviously was not prepared for the interview, she read questions off a sheet of paper and scribbled a few things down and proceeded to tell me about the job. The questions were mostly scinerio questions, such as what would you do in this situation. She read the questions as if she had never read them before which made them hard to understand.

Interviewed Aug 2011 in San Francisco, CA (took a day)
I was able to choose the time I had the interview at. We were asked to bring a visual example of our work.
I did the interview with 6 other candidates. We were asked one question; why we wanted to intern for Macy's Special Events Department. Then the Special Productions Manager did the presentation of the Macy's Passport event. Finally we were asked to talk about the example we brought.
One week later I was informed by email that I was selected to be one of their interns.
I would advice the future candidates to be themselves.
From my point of view, the office environment was friendly and professional.

Interview very basic and easy. Interviewed by 2 managers that asked detailed questions as to my past work experience, which they were pleased with. The job setting seemed unprofessional to me.

Interviewed Aug 2010 in Roseville, CA (took a day)
I came in and met with who would eventually be my immediate manager and the store manager as well. They did a one on one interview with me asking about my experience and telling me that hopes and plans they had for the department.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Lynnwood, WA (took a day)
Upon arriving they make you fill out a sheet pretty much asking basic information, do you have any major vacations or changes planned that might affect your work for the company, why you applied, and a few "life" problems. And then you go into a room and start your interview. The interview was pretty difficult for me because since I have no job experience I could not anwser the question the manager had asked me. They also asked a long of life experience questions which I was lacking because I havent been through any of the senarios that he was asking. Pretty much I bombed the interview when It ended I knew for a fact that I didnt get it :(
The manager was really nice though. I wish they could have given me a chance because apparently I suck a interview. I really need that job too :(

Interviewed Mar 2011 (took a day)
Applied online and the interview was arranged through their recruiting software, which means I talked with no one on the phone. Had several emails asking me to be sure to advise them if I couldn't make the interview. Day of the interview, waited for 40 minutes before someone walking into the office asked me if I had been helped. After overhearing the office staff discuss their scheduled interview times (no one claimed the 2:00 pm interview, which was me), someone came out and said she'd interview me.
Interviewer was from a different department and she had no openings, but explained that the person who was supposed to interview me was too busy. This begs the question: Why am I here?
Interview questions: Why do you want to work at Macys? Do you have any sales experience? What would you do if you saw an employee steal something? Typical retail behavior-based questions. After she was done asking questions, I said I was there to interview for a part-time office position. With a wave of her hand, she said that position had been filled. Then she asked me about my availability to work and I showed her the printout of what I filled out online for days/hours I could work. She suggested a couple of positions that might fit my availability and would forward her resume notes to a hiring manager in the store.
Two days later I got an email from Macy's computer saying that my availability did not match the office assistant work days/hours. Although no interview is a waste of time because I always learn something from it, this interview was insulting. A five minute phone call from the office assistant hiring manager would have cleared up my work availability fit for that position, even if the computer couldn't. Instead, that hiring manager (for the office assistant position) wasted another department manager's time and my time because he/she was too busy. I guess that's what happens when a computer determines who's qualified to perform a job. The more time you save not looking at someone's application, the more time you can spend wasting someone else's time. I wasn't impressed.

Interviewed Oct 2010 (took 1 week)
Applied online on Sunday evening, had response back Monday morning to schedule an interview. Days, dates and times were available. Scheduled interview one week later and was the first candidate. Upon arrival, there was another candidate waiting for the same appointment time. We were both called in by the same individual and were told that this would be a "group interview." We were both asked to provide a brief synopsis of our life, careers, etc. Questioning began (both asked the same questions.) Different questions were then posed to each of us as the interview continued. At the end, I was asked to follow the individual doing the interview to anothe office where I was offered the position. Another HR individual came into the office to speak with me, and after several minutes of reviewing departmental openings, advised me as to which department I would be assigned to. Provided training schedule, dress code expectations (all black *which is great!) and other pertinent information. Overall, the Macy's experience was great and I enjoyed working there. Hopeful to return in 2011!

Interviewed Oct 2010 in Federal Way, WA (took a day)
I applied online for a part-time job with Macy's Price Change Flex Team. A week later I received an e-invitation to set up an appointment for the interview. I had to schedule the appointment on-line. When I logged in to the Macy's site to schedule the appointment, I received a message saying there were no appointments available "at this time" and advised to check back "frequently". I ended up "checking back" every day for 4 weeks. I was finally able to schedule the interview and I was offered only one day and time.
The interview was in the HR department at the store. When I arrived I was handed a form to write in my availability (days and hours). I wrote that I was available M-F 5a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday if there is an urgent need. I thought this was generous on my part since in the job posting Macy's asked for someone available early mornings a few days a week, usually Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
I was interviewed by a woman that was apparently a lead or supervisor for the department where I would work. She wore casual clothing and some kind of "apron" with pockets. We went into a tiny room with only enough space for a desk, her chair, and my chair. I handed her my resume. She asked me to tell her about myself and then asked why I wanted to work for Macy's. She then told me that I was very professional and thanked me for coming in. In essence, she cut the interview short. I've been around long enough to know when that happens. I knew walking out that I was not going to get the job.
A few weeks later I received a letter from Macy's telling me I was not hired because of my availability. What? I had made myself available to them for more days and hours than they requested for the positon.
So...I can only guess at why I was not hired. (Overqualified, the supervisor felt threatened by my experience and background, I said something she didn't like, she planned to hire her sisters son???) I'll never know why they didn't hire me. I just know it wasn't for the reason they gave me.
