Interviewed Nov 2011 in Sacramento, CA (took a day)
I was hired as a part of the temporary seasonal workforce for the holidays. There was a large group interview that lasted a very long time, then they pulled two of us aside at the end and offered us jobs on the spot. A few others got offers later once their resumes circulated through management. I didn't have any retail experience, but they liked my previous employment experience.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Sacramento, CA (took a day)
I applied online and received an email a couple of days later inviting me to schedule for an interview. I scheduled my interview that was about a week and a half later.
I was about 15 minutes early to the interview and waited on the red couch. The lady decided to interview me then and there since she was done with the previous interviewee. She brought me into a room where I waited for another 5 minutes while she went to deal with an issue dealing with another employee. Eventually she came back and asked me a few of questions that were "tell me about a time where...." and I didn't think I was going to get the job because I had no prior retail experience and I mainly talked about school experience. The last few questions she asked were regarding which department I was willing to work in. I told her I was willing to work in any department because that's how I would gain the most experience. I felt that was what sold her. (Luckily before my interview I was reading through these past few interview reviews on this website. ) She then proceeded to tell me that starting pay for this position was $8/hr and she asked me if I was okay with that and I said yes. She then explained that she would go see if any positions were available and if not then I would be "put on bench" which I guess means if there were any openings I would be called for it. After waiting for about 5 minutes she called me into another room and said there was an opening for the Fashion Access/Jewelry Department which happened to be her department and asked me if that was okay and I gladly accepted. After accepting I signed a couple of papers and I chose a day for orientation which happens to be tomorrow. Overall I would say the interview/hiring process took no longer than 20 minutes. I was done 3 minutes after my actual interview appointment time.
As others have said, I recommend wearing all black to your interview. If not all black, then mostly black and make sure you look presentable. Also be flexible and willing to work in different departments, since it's holiday season, they're not looking for someone who only wants to work in one department.

Negotiation Details
No negotiation. I figured since I had no prior retail experience there really was no room for negotiation.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Roseville, CA (took a day)
I interviewed with a woman from HR who told me that I would be perfect for the job, and that she would schedule me for a follow-up interview with the department manager. The next day, instead of a call, I received an automated email stating that I was no longer being considered for the job, with no explanation.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Sacramento, CA (took a day)
I applied online and got an automated e-mail with a link to their website, asking me to schedule a time to be interviewed. I had a choice between 3 times, each a half hour apart, all on the same day. I was told to wait in a room with several other candidates, some of whom had been waiting for over half an hour. I thought at this point that it would be a group interview, but it wasn't. My interview was conducted while walking around the store. I was asked about previous experience, and about the state of the store as we moved through it. I thought it went very well and the manager talked about a position opening soon, and made it sound like she was offering me the position. However, a few days later, I got yet another automated e-mail from HR, saying they had no open positions for me.

Interviewed Aug 2009 in Sacramento, CA (took 6 weeks)
I dont like group interviews. I just dont feel you can really conect with people in groups. The one on one interview would have been fine if the cosmetics manager wass there to interview me. She didnt show up so the womans department manager had to interview me she had no clue about cosmetics it was very unproffesional. Then I had to come in for a third interview and I was told I think you can do makeup but i dont think you can sell makeup and selling is way more important then the artistry. Ans I found that comment highly offensive. Ive been in the makeup industry for 15 years im a certified artist. Yes I do makeup very well but I can also sell just as well I started out selling makeup at a high end department store. Plus who wants to buy makeup from a person that just ruined a costomers face. If you do wonderful makeup they will buy everything.
Reason for Declining
I declined too little money and wanted me to be on call no garanteed hours. Didnt like managers attitude.
