Interviewed Feb 2012 in Santa Barbara, CA (took a day)
I applied to Macy's online and within two days I received an email to schedule my interview. I scheduled my interview that same week and showed up early (which was a plus). After waiting about 15 minutes for a manager to show up, the interview process begin with the cliche question "Tell me about yourself."
Needless to say, my interview went extremely well. At the conclusion of the interview, I asked the manager what was the next step. He told me that they hire on the spot and if he had a position available he would offer it to me. IF HE HAD A POSITION AVAILABLE. This was truly disappointing. After having an awesome interview he basically says I would have got the job if he had a job to give. I felt cheated.
Macy's has an all year application process. The manager told me that they never want to disregard people from applying. So they "bench" good candidates which consists of putting them on a list, so that when a position becomes available, they will notify that applicant for employment.
I felt that all the time and effort put in for my interview was a waste of time. I'm not sure which scenario is worse: Having a great interview and not getting the job, or having a great interview and getting a job that is not available.

Interviewed Jun 2010 (took 5 days)
Interviewed along with 2 other people. We were asked about our days and hours of availability, and then asked simple situational questions. We were then told to walk around the store and pretend to be customers and come back with a review of the customer service we saw. The lady who interviewed me asked each of us in which department we'd like to work in, and told us that we would be receiving a call from the manager of that department. Never got a call. I realize I should have called myself to follow-up, but I got a job at another place.

Interviewed Nov 2011 (took 2 days)
Went online to the Macy's website to begin my quest in acquiring a job. There I applied and answered the questionnaire that was presented to me. After 2 days, I received a phone call for an interview. I entered the human resources office and there I was greeted by the secretary. Shortly after, a gentleman interviewed me with the basic questions : Why do you want to work here? Name one time where you experienced great customer service? Would you sacrifice your precious time to be one of our many slaves? How would coworkers describe you? How do you like being a physical measurement in our materialistic society?
At the end of the interview, he thanks you and he checks if there are any open positions available . Astonishingly there isn't.

Interviewed Jan 2010 (took a day)
Applied for a seasonal position for extra income. Routine hiring process, very straight forward with completing the application and with interviewing. Had general interview questions surrounding sales skills, personality, & goals. Received job offer fairly quickly for a sales associate position. Initially had difficulty adjusting with several female co-workers who worked there permanently, but they were more receptive to my position later on. Had several issues with commission-hungry individuals who would often steal sales. Worked during a busy holiday season. Great working on a short-term basis for extra shopping cash. Also a great way to meet new people. Overall, low-stress and easy job.

Interviewed Nov 2011 in Scottsdale, AZ (took a day)
I applied for Macy's on their company's website. Within 48 hours after I completed the application, I received an email inviting me to an interview.
The first thing I noticed when I went into the store was how clean and organized everything looked. The employees were all very kind and greeted anyone who walked into the store, and the atmosphere was professional, yet relaxed.
The lady who interview me was very nice and helpful. She asked a few questions about my previous experience and the skills that I can bring into the company. The interview was just 1:1 and took no more than an hour.
If there is any advice that I can give for the interview process, it is to be yourself. Relax and try not to rush yourself to provide a quick answer to a question. At the same time, don't stall for more than 15 seconds for one answer. Maintain eye contact with your interviewer. This is pretty much given, but do dress professionally for the interview. Also, it is a good idea to wear all black to the interview, but if you can, try to incorporate a little color into the wardrobe. Oh yeah, and be sure to have a couple of questions ready for the interviewer as well.

Interviewed Nov 2011 in Portland, OR (took 5 days)
There were two one on one interviews. The first one generally asked about any retail or customer service experience, what you would do in certain situations, whether or not you are able to work on days such as Black Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Years day. The second interview you fill in more details, and you are asked to describe how you would offer the Macy's card to the employer.

Interviewed Oct 2011 (took 2 days)
They send you to a hotel at the HQ and the first day you are charmed by the Macy's culture including a wine and dine with executives. The second day, they get straight to business. You are put in a group and go through the interview stations in the group throughout the day (8am-4pm). You will interview individually with an executive (mostly conversational) with common questions: "Tell me a time when..." You will also 2 presentations. One of them, you will study a department scorecard and suggest how you will improve the department/employee logistics. Don't focus on numbers too much. The other presentation is in a group setting and for about half an hour they will analyze how you work in a team to resolve the issue at hand. You will also do another one-on-one interview that asks questions about the personality test online. Try to stick with your initial answers.
