Interviewed Feb 2012 in Manchester, England (United Kingdom) (took 4 days)
I went through an agency to M&S to a job which i thought to be a reporting job but it turned out to be it is accounts receivable position.
It was the agency mess things up so can't say much about M&S on this.
There were 2 people in the interview. Manager was asking questions mostly and supervisor was taking notes and also asking 1-2 questions if more clarification is needed.
There are some capability base questions (5-6). You do not receive capability pack to get ready for them but expect questions like ' Describe a time when a customer was dissatisfied with your or your team's performance and you had to solve it'
Office location is in a good place - Spinningfields . Easy to commute.
The job I went for was paying between 19k to 21k. Also they offer you study support if you are doing CIMA, AAT or ACCA.
I know people working there - there is some overtime involved. Good name as a company but looks like a bit disorganized.

Reason for Declining

Interviewed Aug 2011 in Chester, England (United Kingdom) (took a day)
I applied online and was telephoned to arrange my attendance at the group "assessment centre". I was expecting some tasks, a group discussion and a 1-1 interview, but this wasn't exactly what happened.
All six of us applicants were taken into a room where the manager told us about the job role and explained what we had to do.
We were asked to write a letter in response to a make-believe letter a customer had sent in. We were also asked to read a make-believe letter which an adviser had written to a customer, and we had to correct all of the spelling and grammar mistakes in it. After we had completed both we could leave. No interview, and no group discussion.
A few days later I recieved a call offering me the job. Found it a bit strange that we weren't interviewed at all, so I basically got the job on my ability to spell and write an apologetic letter.
Negotiation Details
No negotiation involved. Dress smart, and consider how you would feel if you were a customer when completing the task. I would usually advise researching the company, however, I did this, and it wasn't even needed
Other Details
I Applied Online and the interview consisted of a Skills Test.

Interviewed Sep 2011 in Leeds, Yorkshire and the Humber, England (United Kingdom) (took a day)
The interview basically consists of role play whereby you would be put in a tacky situation where the customer is furious on you as may be they ordered something which hasn't arrive and you dont have any managerial guidance. How would you tackle the situation.

Interviewed Apr 2010 in London, England (United Kingdom) (took 1 week)
At first, applicants who met the minimum requirements were required to complete three online tests including verbal, numerical and logical tests. A phone interview would follow approximately after a week if the applicant passed the tests. The online tests were not difficult if you practice enough, the phone interview was general straight but the lady did ask a random question about my opinion about the quality of their men's wear products. I personally think that their men's wear products were old fashioned and ugly so I had never bought any and therefore I was not able to give an answer.

Interviewed Sep 2009 in Manchester, England (United Kingdom) (took a day)
Applied online, completed a quiz to see if I was a good fit for M&S which I passed. Was then offered an interview at the local job centre the following week. Went along and was told that I was to take part in a role-play of a store interaction. My situation was supporting a colleague who had been assigned as my 'buddy' and was under-performing, with one interviewer playing the colleague and the other assessing my performance, was given 5 minutes to prepare and take notes after being supplied with an overview of the situation and information about M&S protocol. Was then asked to assess my own performance and fill in an application form whilst they discussed my performance. Was taken into the interview room where we discussed how I performed in the role-play, I was marked out of 5 in a few categories and was told that I had gained a 5 in each category and that they would like to make me a job offer. Unfortunately they didn't have any suitable positions for me at that time due to my availability but was given the choice to take a job position in store with my standing offer in the 6 months following the interview.
