Interviewed Jan 2008 in Rochester, MN (took 3 weeks)
It is very difficult for an outsider (at least in Rochester) to get an interview at Mayo Clinic. They are very closed and prefer shift people from within from different departments. Whether you are from the outside or inside, you are required to do an behavioral interview. I conducted many of these interviews. They are also required to do a certain amount of interviews. On many occasions we knew exactly who was going to be hired (from the inside) but were required to do a certain number of interviews anyway. This wasted everyone's time but procedures within Mayo are required to be followed EXACTLY! Situational, behavioral questions are asked.

Negotiation Details
Completely and totally a waste of time to negotiate an offer. I had excellent references and experience and even letters from physicians from the inside sent to HR and they could have cared less.
Other Details
I got the interview through a Staffing Agency and the interview consisted of a Group/Panel Interview and a Background Check.

Interviewed Jul 2008 (took 2 weeks)
A friend recommended I apply for an open position at Mayo Hospital Research & gave me a name to call. After several phone calls back & forth, an interview was scheduled at the office of the supervisor. 2 staff members interviewed me. It was difficult for me to find a good surface to write their names down. I hadn't had a job interview in 6 years, was recently laid off; so the questions took me a bit off guard, though they were quite appropriate behavioral and knowledge-based questions. I actually thought I had done well, and that they valueded my Masters degree (which was not required.) At the very end of the interview, the lady said, "We will be interviewing for TWO MORE WEEKS, we'll contact you then." I nearly fainted, realizing that the number of applicants must have been very high. When I was told the position was filled, I retreated from job hunting and took a pleasant, close-to-home part-time job (vastly underpaid and underemployed.)

Interviewed Jul 2008 in Rochester, MN (took a day)
The interviews were two part- first on the phone and the second is in person. Phone interview was just a screening process- generic questions- strenghts? weaknesses? Why Mayo? Experience? In person interivew was with three people and consisted of over 10 behavioral questions. Interviewer provided a sheet describing a certain quality and I was asked to show how I demonstrated such a quality in the past.
