Interviewed Oct 2009 (took 4 months)
I applied in June and went through a series of interviews with manager, publisher, president and members of other departments. The process took four months! I had one phone interview and three in-person interviews. I had to meet with two employees twice. Frankly, I think they prolonged the process so I would start in October and, therefore, not be elligible for the bonus payout the next year.
Negotiation Details
Yes. I was offered a low salary. Probably one that was quite adequate for living in Columbus, but not where I lived. I counter offered and they matched my counter offer. I also received a signing bonus.
Other Details
I Applied Online and the interview consisted of a Phone Interview, a 1:1 Interview and a Background Check.

Interviewed Mar 2009 (took 2 days)
Not sure if I described the duration of the interview properly. Regardless, I was referred to a position with McGraw-Hill in 2009. I interviewed with someone from their office in Columbus, OH over the phone and was subsequently interviewed 1:1 with the person under whom I would be working. The person I interviewed with and other employees at the office seemed friendly enough. As much as I wanted the position, I was not offered it.

Interviewed Jul 2010 in New York, NY (took 3 weeks)
It was fairly straightforward. I found the exchanges with the recruiter to be very pleasant and informative. The 1:1 with the hiring manager was a great conversation. However, the company HR manager was fairly reserved and not necessarily a great ambassador for the company. The interview felt less like an interrogation based on qualifications than maybe what someone might feel interviewing for a private club. I would say the culture is extremely conservative.

Interviewed Feb 2010 (took 2 weeks)
Phone interview was a validation of credentials and expectations. Scheduled a face to face. What a fiasco. Very disorganized - no real questions asked or answers to questions given. Interviewer did not have insight into the job or expectations. Appeared as though the decision had already been made. After a very unsatisfying interview, he actually had the audacity to ask for a complete recap of both the phone interview (2 weeks previous) and the current interview, so he could pass along to the hiring manager. (As though he would not be making recommendations or screening - so why did i just waste my time?) I completed the "homework" assignment and followed up a week later - only to get an out of office/vacation auto response. I continued to follow up weekly - without response. three months + later, they declined. Really? I had always considered McGraw-Hill to be a professional org...that's why i applied. boy, was i wrong.

Interviewed Aug 2008 in New York, NY (took 2 months)
It took a long time - four interviews with four different people. A lot of hard questions were asked, as this particular division did not trust its employees and so screened very carefully. One of the reasons why it took so long is because there was a lot of reorganization going on, and that impacted who I would be working under. In retrospect, it took too long, and was a sign that something was amiss in this department. I've learned since to go with my gut regarding how I feel about the interview process, because it often mirrors actually working there.

Interviewed Jan 2009 (took 6+ weeks)
Took forever, made constant trips back to NYC, only to have the job given to a friend of the person I would have been working for. Even went into NYC (90 minutes commute) to arrive once and get told that the person I was supposed to interview with wouldn't be able to meet with me, so I would need to reschedule for another day. Which I did (because I was in the top three for the position).

The interview consisted of a Phone Interview, a 1:1 Interview and a Group/Panel Interview.

Interviewed Sep 2009 in New York, NY (took 3 months)
the whole process was very long and between the initial phone interview and the 1:1 it took them a very long time. When I was finally called in for the face-to-face they said they had already filled the position. Not too sure why they called me in at all... Well the hiring manager mentioned she had just started looking for someone. After the one hour long interview she said she was going to see if she can find someone else to interview me ( so that I meet with less people on the second interview) and then she came back and said no one was available.

Interviewed Jul 2009 in New York, NY (took 4+ weeks)
After being contacted by a recuiter for a position with McGraw-Hill, I had an initial phone interview with the Hiring Manager. The questions were very antagonistic and I assumed the interview was going no where. Several weeks later, the recuiter contacted me to say they wanted me to come in for an in-person interview. I was skeptical, but figured I had nothing to lose.
I first met with the hiring manager who turned out to be more personable in person, but she asked alot of hypothetical questions without really asking me much about my background. Although we were scheduled for an hour, after 45 minutes, she glanced at her Blackberry and suddenly seemed distracted and excused herself. I was scheduled to speak to another person in 15 minutes, so I sat and waited...and waited....and waited. 30 minutes later, the other person arrived and he also proceeded to ask many hypothetical questions.
Very strange environment!
