Interviewed Nov 2011 in Elmhurst, IL (took a day)
I applied for a warehouse position, but after reviewing my qualifications, asked if I would be interested in either customer service or product research. The interview went well with most discussion focused on the positions the interviewer suggested. I did not receive an offer.

Interviewed Mar 2012 in Elmhurst, IL (took 2 days)
Too good to be true? Yep. First, I urge anyone contacted by this company for this position not to waste their time unless they actually want to leave their current high-paying, well-earned, and high-responsibility job to answer phones in a call center. I am really annoyed that McMaster-Carr's recruiter contacted me, spent 30 minutes talking to me on the phone (I had very little chance to ask questions or respond), convinced me to come in for an interview... all for a job that they very blatantly misrepresented over the phone and through email. The job is a call center job. Customer service, leashed to your phone at your desk. That is great if that's what you're looking for, but I find the company's outright misrepresentation of the position and the job's duties to be very misleading and unethical. During my second email conversation with the recruiter, I told her flat out I wanted at least $55K, and she replied that they "offer a competitive salary." Seriously, $55K to answer phones in a call center? I should've known right there not to waste my time.
My in person interview (for which I wasted a half day of personal time) consisted of four individual interviews; about 20 min with the recruiter, and meeting individually with different managers. There was also one skills test, and two "discussions" about how I'd handle certain types of calls. During the last interview, the manager could not look me in the eye, stared out the window of the room we were in, and talked the entire time. I was unable to "discuss" anything; it was just 20 minutes of listening. Much of the interview process at McMaster-Carr is listening to them talk about how they run their business, and how great they are. Didn't get much chance to discuss how/why I fit with the company.
Anyway, I felt compelled to report this to others on glassdoor.com, because what every review says is right. This is really a waste of time. I was interested because they offer 100% tuition reimbursement, but everything about this place screams "DON'T DO IT. DON'T QUIT YOUR RESPECTABLE JOB THREE TIERS ABOVE THIS POSITION TO ANSWER PHONES--A JOB WHICH WAS PRESENTED AS SOMETHING MORE THAN IT IS."

Interviewed Mar 2012 in Elmhurst, IL (took 1+ week)
After meeting with recruiters at a job fair and going through a culture fit interview a few days later, I was invited for an all-day interview in Elmhurst. I met with seven people during six interviews which were either 1.5 hours or one hour in length (total 7 hours plus about an hour of downtime and paperwork). I was asked the exact same questions over and over again: what are you doing now and why do you want to leave for McMaster-Carr? The interviewers ranged from new employees to (what seemed to be) senior-level management types. Overall, the experience was relatively low-stress, but it grew quite exasperating to endure the same questions six times.

Interviewed Oct 2011 in Chicago, IL (took a day)
I found out about the position through a poster distributed by my college's Career Development Office. I applied by the deadline with a resume and cover letter (I do not remember if the cover letter was required). They contacted me via email and we scheduled an interview. For the first 20 minutes or so the HR representative told me about the position and the work. I decided from our conversation that I wasn't actually interested in the position. I was looking for a more energetic, engaging workplace and I did not get the impression that was what they had from her descriptions.

Interviewed Feb 2012 in Elmhurst, IL (took 2 days)
I had a phone interview with their recruiter and set up an interview for a few days later. Upon my arrival I met with the recruiter for the first half-hour and rehashed my experience on my resume. Next was a tour of the warehouse with a female supervisor explaining their processes. Next was a 1:1 interview with a male supervisor who seemed like he wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. He was not asking any in-depth interview questions and was just trying to pick apart my resume/put me on the spot. Lastly was another 1:1 interview with a female manager. She was also not asking insightful interview questions...just picking apart my resume/trying to catch me off guard/seeing if I could explain my previous work experience (which I had already done twice). Overall, the nicest, most insightful interviewers were the first two; the third seemed liked he wanted to get out of there and the last seemed like a waste of time. Overall, everyone working in the warehouse was busting their butts and seemed miserable and scared to screw up.

Interviewed Mar 2012 in Chicago, IL (took a day)
I first had a pre-screen with a campus recruiter. The interview lasted about 30 minutes, behavioral with some case - relatively easy. I received a phone call 2 days later saying that they would fly me out to Chicago for a final round interview. It took pretty much all day (from 8 AM - 4 PM) that consisted of a tour, four 1 hour interviews, and an informal interview with 2 employees over lunch. Overall, I had a rather good experience and I am still waiting to hear back from them.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Elmhurst, IL (took a day)
One one-on-one interview with an alum of my college, and then a day of super interviews that included a tour of the warehouse and several interviews with different people. I did not know what to expect and I was unprepared for the tough questions they asked me, but I ended up with a job offer.

Interviewed Jul 2011 in Elmhurst, IL (took 2 days)
Started out with a phone interview from their recruiter. Subsequently went in for first round of interviews, starting with the recruiter from the phone interview. Interviewed with three other employees of the company. Questions were not overly difficult, but definitely be prepared to answer questions about your education, experience and other qualifications/skills.

Interviewed Apr 2011 in Elmhurst, IL (took a day)
I had a phone interview with one of the recruiters. He asked me general questions about myself. He then explained what position they were looking to fill and if that seemed interesting to me. I had asked about the potential for growth and he stated that there was a possibility for growth, but the overall impression that I got was that this job was pretty flat. I eventually found out that i was being interviewed for a phone order representative.

Interviewed Jun 2011 in Elmhurst, IL (took a day)
I was contacted by HR and asked if I would be willing to do a brief phone interview. The phone interview was relatively simple - I was asked why I left my last place of employment and where else I was applying specifically. The woman I spoke with described the job in greater detail and asked me to come in for an interview. The interview lasted about three hours and consisted of speaking with four people individually and taking a skills test. Essentially I felt that each person I spoke with was either trying to talk me out of the position or was more interested in going to lunch than conducting an interview. I also realized that the title "Proofreader" is extremely misleading - there is very little proofreading done in this position, which I wish I had known ahead of time.
