Interviewed Jun 2010 in Rahway, NJ (took 4 weeks)
It was a good interview process, but I got the feeling that from one person to the next that my qualifications weren't quite being communicated. I also felt like the interview wasn't really relevant to the position I was going after. They didn't test me on anything or didn't ask me any pertinent questions.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
I got the feeling the job would be very political. also they couldn't match my salary requirements.

The key to responding to an off-the-wall question is not to let it rattle you. Don't adopt a deer-in-the-headlights look if you get hit with one of these funky queries. Simply smile, take a deep breathe, and take a moment to compose your response. A little bit of silence is better than blurting out something even sillier than the question. You don't have to brilliant. You don't have to be witty. Just be yourself and give an honest response. If worse comes to worst, and you absolutely cannot think of an answer, ask if you can come back to that question later. You may lose a few thinking-on-your-feet points, but you'll gain points for handling a difficult situation with poise.

Interviewed Apr 2009 in Newark, NJ (took a day)
The interviewer appeared to be impatient. The interview questions were generic, and the interviewer did not seem interested in the responses. Candidates how are interviewing should focus and project accomplishments and what specific roll they played in those projects. The work culture appeared fair. There was one face to face interview.

Interviewed Jul 2009 in New York, NY (took 2 months)
Multiple rounds of interview - most difficult was onsite with Four managers and meeting with them individually. All personality questions. As soon as I was done speaking with one, I would go back to the waiting room with a number of other candidates. It's important to know that the managers talk among themselves as they interview candidates - by the time I got to the last manager she told me she had already received a lot of good feedback from the other three and that she wanted to get to know me better during a third round interview by herself. The questions where all behavioral questions. PS Note this was not in 2009 but 2006.
Negotiation Details
No negotiation process unfortunately - I was just happy to get a job out of college.

Interviewed Nov 2009 in Whitehouse Station, NJ (took a day)
Had two 1:1 interviews. Both interviewers were very nice. One focused on behavioural questions and the other gave case questions. One case question: We have a drug about to enter phase II clinical trials. Please explain to me how you would arrive at a price for this drug even though it is still very early in the development phase. Very little feedback from either interviewer after the process was finished.

Interviewed Jan 2009 in Rahway, NJ (took 3 months)
This was an internal transfer. I posted resume and cover letter to the internal careers site and, about a month later, was contacted for a phone screen. The phone screen by the hiring manager was short and general--mostly questions about my resume and how my experience related to the posted position. This was followed by face-to-face 1-hour interviews with several internal "clients", the head of the hiring department, and the HR business partner. Almost all of the interviews were focused on getting a sense for me and how well I would work with the clients, with only one interviewer (aside than HR) asking pointed questions about my skills and experience. However, given that the resume I submitted was very detailed and that interpersonal skills were crucial to the position, this seemed appropriate.

Negotiation Details
This was an internal transfer (lateral move), and there was no negotiation around salary. My salary in my previous position was already at the higher end of the salary for the new position.

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Whitehouse Station, NJ (took a day)
Merck came onto the UC Berkeley Campus in Fall 2009 during an infosession hosted by the UC Berkeley Chapter of AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers). After submitting my resume via On-Campus Recruiting (OCR), I was invited for an interview at the UC Berkeley Career Center.
On the day of the interview, I was interviewed by a man with a Ph.D degree in Chemical Engineering who worked in the vaccines division. Most of the questions were behavioral, asking you to demonstrate instances in which you took charge in a team or had experience with conflict resolution within a team. Make sure to prepare examples for these behavioral-type questions beforehand. At the end of the interview, I was given an open-ended technical problem that I was asked to propose a solution to. This problem regarded the use of fermenters to produce biologics and how to detect contamination of the product or determine when was the optimal harvest times, etc. This problem was probably designed to test how you think as an engineer.
Overall, I felt that my interview went okay as I felt I could have provided a better solution to the technical problem. However, I felt my interviewer was the typical engineer stereotype in which he wasn't very engaging and didn't smile at me at all; he wasn't friendly or unfriendly, simply neutral and I was unable to tell if he was interested in me at all.
Two weeks later, I heard back and was not invited back to proceed with the Interview Process.
The MMDP program I applied for is apparently a very competitive rotational program.

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Rahway, NJ (took a day)
First got a phone interview followed by an immediate invitation for an on-site interview.
Presentation was for a very limited number of people (not the group I was supposed to work with). In general you meet with leaders of other groups that might be interested in hiring you for other available positions. I enjoyed the interview, however the position was canceled due to the merger with Schering Plough...

Interviewed Apr 2009 in Whitehouse Station, NJ (took 3 days)
Merck was very professional. I was called via telephone and offered an interview a few days following the phone call. I woke up that morning and was scheduled to come in at 10am. I went in, spoke with numerous people (who were polite, courteous and professional) and was offered the job. The process was easy and convenient. Unfortunately I received a better offer and took that. Merck is a good place.
