Interviewed Aug 2010 in New York, NY (took 2 weeks)
The interview process was an initial phone screen after a resume drop.
It was basically fit questions and why I was interested in the position. I felt like I answered ok, but it was enough to get me by.
After that I had a 1:1 which went very well and I got the offer the next week.

Interviewed Jan 2012 (took 2 months)
It seems that Financial Advisor positions with some of the big houses aren't getting filled that quickly. Morgan Stanley has been trying to fill some positions for a while, locally. I was invited to interview with Merrill Lynch. I still haven't had a face to face interview yet. I have however, had two phone interviews, and have had to take the "Prove it" exam. I guess that's the equivalent of the "FIAT" test. Challenging if you haven't brushed up on that type of math. A lot of decimals and fractions. Also, a large component of the test is economics. Good to brush up on GDP, etc., Stock splits.

Interviewed Dec 2011 (took 7+ weeks)
I applied on the BofA careers website and was contacted a few days later to take a personality test (CAT-Candidate Assessment Test). This basically measures whether you're the right sort of person for the job. About 2-3 days later an HR person contacted me to attend a career night at one of the branch offices. It was a great forum to see if this is the kind of work you really want to get into.
After that, the same HR person called to answer any other questions I had and to confirm my interest in proceeding and further exploring the opportunity. I was then asked to meet with a Director at the branch I was interested in. At the same time, I was asked to sit for a FIAT (Financial Information and Aptitude Test). You have to get a 17/30 to pass. I passed and was given a business plan (BP) template to complete. This is given to you in Word but I strongly recommend you submit it in PowerPoint. They don't require a specific format but by sending them a nice PPT booklet (~10 slides), I had already started to impress them.
The next step was to discuss this BP with the Director. I then sat with one of their experienced FA's to discuss parts of the BP and to convince them I knew what I was getting myself into. Do not be fooled, unless you get thumbs UP (no maybes and no thumbs down) from EVERY PERSON YOU SPEAK TO, you will not make it to the next stage.
Next was to speak with the branch Managing Director (or whatever other title they hold…pretty much the top dog at that office). It is the same conversation yet again only this time you will know on the spot whether you’ve made it or not. If you have, you’ll be asked to sit for a panel interview. If not, you’ll be shown the door with a nice pat on the back. Once they’ve asked you to sit for the panel interview you’ve pretty much nailed it. You still have to perform at that interview but it is really a second opinion to make sure you’re not being blatantly favored by anyone. Like any panel interview, you better have yourself prepared otherwise you’ll fall flat on your face 3 feet from the finish line of a marathon (which is what this process is). The reason I say that is the final question of the 30 minute interview was “In 30 seconds, tell us why we should hire you over all the other people that want this job.”

Interviewed Nov 2011 (took 1 week)
I applied for their internship on website. Then got a call from a lady, asking me questions about my past experiences, why interested in this internship. Then she requested me to go to the office for a face to face internview. The face to face interview is similar and have more discussion on my availability/schedule etc.

Interviewed Jul 2011 (took a day)
Very professional offices and work places. The interview was really laid back, they just told me about the internship position and what they expected, they didn't ask many questions. When they were done talking they just asked for me to follow up with them on email and tell them how interested I was in the position. So they next day I emailed them telling them I would love the job and the next day they called me and offered me the internship.

Interviewed Aug 2011 (took a day)
I applied on the college website and within 3 days they emailed to ask a few questions about my graduation date and if i was getting credit for the internship. Next I received a phone call from the Director's assistant for an interview. I interviewed the same week and got an offer the same day. The interviewer liked my resume and the whole process lasted about 15 minutes. After the offer i went through an intensive background check and started a month later. It is a great experience, i learnt a lot and mostly I admired the professionalism within the work place

Communicated initially through a past intern and emailed employer, then eventually got a 1:1 interview. Make sure that you are persistent, though not annoying.

Nothing really. There isn't much to negotiate. It's unpaid, and they have pretty strict protocol they follow. They are flexible with hours, though, if you are a student.
