Overall Neutral Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Feb 2007 in Seattle, WA (took 4+ weeks)

Began with an on campus interview with an alum. Typical MBA level interview for a marketing position, and included a short case. Was invited to Redmond for second rounds where I interviewed with a total of 6 people in one day--all back to back. If the first few people like you, they will keep adding interviews with more senior folks. Really was not too demanding of an interview.

My advice would be to know marketing basics and be quick on your feet with cases and critical thinking, but the level of inquiry is not as demanding as consulting case interviews.

Interview Questions

A typical question would involve marketing a product Microsoft currently offers. I was asked how I would develop a marketing strategy around Live Search (now Bing).

Negotiation Details

Not a lot of movement on salary or stock, but was able to drive signing bonus up about 30% (which probably means I could have gotten more).

Other Details

I got the interview through a College or University and the interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview, a Group/Panel Interview and a Background Check.

University recruitment. Microsoft came and gave an information session and also came to our career fair at UCSB. They took resumes and then emailed invitations to be interviewed on campus. An optional question and answer section was held the night before for all the interviewees and the interviewers. It was one 30 minute interview.

Program Manager II at Microsoft

Overall Positive Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Hyderabad (took 6 months)

The overall hiring process was really time consuming and interview dates were changed many times during the whole process. The venue in NCR was OK. I was finally called for a full day interview to their Hyderabad office. Types of questions asked in the interview were really open ended in nature and some where related to real-life with no right or wrong answer. They mostly probed on the thought process, ability to cover different aspects of the problem. Though the event was not well planned in terms of managing time but overall I consider this a good experience.

Interview Questions

Design a mobile phone for 3-6 years old kids.
Design a ticketing system to solve the problem of large queues outside ticket counters on Metro stations in India.
Present a business case for Microsoft Office on Symbion Platform.
Future of smart phones and where do you see them after 5 years from now.

Negotiation Details

I was not able to negotiate as they were practically not open for negotiations.

Other Details

I got the interview through a Recruiter and the interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview and a Background Check.

Senior Product Manager at Microsoft

Difficult Interview
Overall Neutral Experience Interviewed and No Offer

Interviewed Feb 2007 in Redmond, WA (took 2 months)

Had initial phone screen for position, then talked to two different people to screen for my technical depth. Once I made it through that I was flown to the main campus for a few interviews and then asked to present my strategy on the product. Once I presented to a group I waited to hear back. Typically between me and two other people. Didn't get the interview but it was a thorough and challenging process.

Interview Questions

What has been the hardest thing for you to convince your superiors of and what did you do to get them to agree?

Other Details

I got the interview through an Employee Referral and the interview consisted of a Phone Interview, a 1:1 Interview, a Presentation and a Skills Test.

Interviewed Jul 2007 (took 3 weeks)

The initial communication started with a phone screen and a couple of technical questions. That was followed up by a second phone interview and then there was a day long interview with the hiring group in Redmond. The interview consisted of 7 in-person interviews.
Most of the questions were about algorithms and design.
Examples:
Design a system that syncs data between 2 servers.
Compare 2 lists to determine if they are identical

Interview Questions

Return the sum of the 2 largest integers in an array. Make this more efficient.
Write a code snippet to general the first 10 Fibonnaci numbers.

Reason for Declining

Overall Negative Experience Interviewed and No Offer

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Redmond, WA (took a day)

I applied online through the Microsoft website and was contacted a few days later through email by a HR company. This email had arranged several campus interview dates and asked me to list the times I was available. At the interview I met with a Manager of a Software Development Engineer in Test. He took casual to an extreme, and was noticeably tired and uninterested. He had been interviewing candidates all day. He asked two logic based questions.

Interview Questions

Imagine you're a door company, and the company that sells you your door handles decides to raise the price. You now want to make your own handles and enter the door handle market. How would you design your door handle
You are given two numbers M and N, ex. 10 and 15, and array with N-M numbers. In that array are numbers between M and N. Ex( 11,12,13,11,14). The numbers are not ordered, and can be repeated. How do you find the number(s) which is not listed in the array.

Other Details

The interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview and a Skills Test.

Overall Neutral Experience Received and Accepted Offer

Interviewed Mar 2007 in Redmond, WA (took 3 days)

Started of at the College campus recruiting fair. Microsoft had a boot there where i went and submitted my resume. Also i spoke to one of the recuiters there and told her about my background and why i was interested in working for microsoft. She asked me a few general questions about my resume and then she asked me a question about reversing a linked list. I wrote an algorithm for her and she took down a few notes while i did that.
After a couple of days i was notified by the college recuiting that i have an on campus interview scheduled with Microsoft in the next week.

On Campus Interview:
Duration 1 hour.
Started with looking at resume and asking some simple questions about my projects and experience. After that i was asked to write a program with Array's (I don't remeber the exact question). After that, about a week after i was called my an HR person from microsoft to schedule an On-Site interview.

On Site Interview:
Duration: 5 Interviews of 45 mins each

1. Started of by meeting a HR manager who asked me question like, what do i do. Why would i want to work at microsoft. and then she briefed me on what my day would look like.
2. Interview with an SDET 2 - He asked me how will you test a Stapler
3. Interview with an SDET 2 - He asked me how will you test UI for a file dialog in windows.
4. Interview with an SDET Lead - He asked me about my fav programming language. Then we moved on to a coding question. How will you reverse the words in the string.
5. Interview with a Test Manager: This was more informational. Where the manager talked about the product from a higher level, the kind of work they do.

After about a week of the full time interview, i was notified that they had an offer for me.

Interview Questions

How would you reverse the words in a string?
How will you test a Stapler
How will you test the UI for a file dialog in Windows

Negotiation Details

I was not able to negotiate my offer. I would say if you have multiple offers in hand go for the negotiations.

Other Details

I got the interview through a College or University and the interview consisted of a Phone Interview and a 1:1 Interview.

Difficult Interview
Overall Positive Experience Received and Declined Offer

Interviewed Jul 2007 in Redmond, WA (took 2 days)

Incredibly nice and positive people. Flexible with my schedule. Gave credence to my requirements. Worked with my handicap. They asked questions from basic algorithms to asynchronous algorithms. The office space seemed pleasant to work in. The team consisted of a couple of PhDs and others with lots of industry experience, including non-Microsoft technologies which gives a broader perspective on software development.

Interview Questions

Can you describe a few ways of improving the performance of the given online service?

Reason for Declining

Wasn't the right time in my life to make the change.

Other Details

I applied In-Person and the interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview.

Project Manager at Microsoft

Easy Interview
Overall Positive Experience Interviewed and No Offer

Interviewed Oct 2009 in Mountain View, CA (took 3 days)

Initial contact came from a recruiter at a body shop (this was for a 6 month contract). "We found you on the web". Recruiter conducted a more thorough than usual phone screen, seemed to know her subject matter, and referred me to the hiring manager at Microsoft. The hiring manager called me the next day, but she was really sick - the interview lasted about 20 minutes. She was very friendly, the interview was pleasant, the questions fairly lowball. It quickly became apparent that they wanted in-depth technical experience that I did not have (this wasn't clear from the job description). The next day the recruiter called me and confirmed this.

Interview Questions

What is the largest project you have managed?
What technologies would you consider yourself expert in?

Other Details

I got the interview through a Recruiter and the interview consisted of a Phone Interview.
