Interviewed Oct 2009 in Redmond, WA (took 4 weeks)
A friend at MS signed me up for Employee Referral program and applied for several Program Manager positions. After 3 weeks of not hearing anything, I received an email from MS Recruiter stating they were interested in my qualifications. A few days later, I had phonescreen with hiring manager, it lasted 30 min and went very well. Questions asked were 1) tell me about yourself, 2) why are you interested in this position, 3) what are your strengths. Then I was asked to come onsite.
During this time, I prepared a lot for this interview. I knew of 3 people who works at MS and asked all about interviewing process; I had 30 min phone discussion with them and asked them lots of questions on what to expect during interview such as write on board, ask questions, smile & stay interested in the product and technology, et.c. I read the blogs on MS website on interviewing tips, that was helpful. I read a lot about the product for which I'm interviewing, even found MS contacts from one of the conferences I attended and interviewed them as well since they had experience with it.
2 weeks after phonescreen, they flew me up to Redmond from San Diego and put me at hotel in Bellevue. It was a very nice experience -- paid for meals, lodging, transportation. I stayed 3 nights and 2 days: the day prior to interview, I toured the campus, Bellevue, and downtown Seattle. Recruiter called me and said I will talk to only 2 people, then get a break:
Next day was the big day. I was greeted by a Group Program Manager and interviewed with him. He spent a lot of time talking about himself, the organization, and the role. He spent the last 10 min asking me only 2 questions: 1) describe a time you had dealing with someone who didn't collaborate, 2) business strategy on the product. Next person was Dev Mgr and took me to lunch (no interviewing, just chatting), then went back to his office for only 3 questions: 1) experience with product design & how I did it, 2) code leverage/borrow experience, 3) usability & user feedback experience.
After this, they told me to take a break. This meant that if I failed, they would send me home. 20 min later, they brought a PM Lead, and my 3rd interview continued in her office. She asked 1) about my experience as a PM, 2) another design question, 3) how to improve the current product. Then she took me to the hiring manager's office, but this wasn't an interview, so we chatted, I asked about the job specifics & questioned him as a manager. Then he sent me home.
I already felt I failed since only 3 people interviewed me, even though I felt good in all my answers. Next day, recruiter emailed me saying I didn't make it. When I asked for comments from team or reason for not selecting me, she didn't provide.
Overall, my experience was good and they took care of me real well throughout the process. The questions were not difficult if you prepared, but perhaps I didn't take initiative to write on white board as often as I should. I believe they already made up their mind based on this or perhaps they didn't like some of my answers. They didn't ask me any brain teasers or puzzles. They key is to know your PM skills well and relate to questions they ask, and be as detailed as possible by using white board to help explain. Focus on product design experience, how to take in customer input/feedback to design, how to resolve disparate customer feedback, improvements in the product you are interviewing for, business strategy around the product (competition, opportunities, challenges, etc.). I believe my experience was more in fit not about your qualifications, so if you do well communicating, explaining, and show you're collaborating & listening, you'll be a good fit.
The campus is amazing, there are lots of young people in their 20's, 30's, with many product groups. MS is huge, so perhaps I will try again as my experience here will help me next time.

Interviewed Oct 2009 (took 1+ week)
This was a first round on campus interview that lasted 30 mins. The interviewer was very nice and friendly. The interview structure was as follows: one coding question, one tell me about your current work question, one why do you want to be program manager type of question, and tell me about a technology/software you like/dislike and why. I am yet to hear back from them.

Interviewed Feb 2007 (took a day)
I was interviewing for a contingent position. There were three rounds of interview with the reporting manager, head of department and a peer. Two face to face and one over the phone (because the reporting manger was unavailable). The interview setting was relaxing and informal. There are no structured interview questions. Most of the questions relate to queries on my previous working experience.

Interviewed Jul 2008 in Hyderabad (took 1 week)
Interview was scheduled by a recruiter. There was phone interview and then called for in person interview. Had to wait for an hour at their office to get the interviewer's time slot. Interview process is not properly organized. Later, I had go from room from to meet about 5 managers (or leads) and talk to them. They don't seem to be prepared for interviewing me. I could easily answer their questions. It seems I was turned dow because I'm a Java guy and their work is mostly around .Net.

I was not really prepared for this interview. The inverviewer asked me a puzzle. I don't remember the puzzle correctly and I made a slight mistake somewhere. I was able to solve it in the end but it did not impress the interviewer. He asked me to wait for the next round but it never happend.

Interviewed Feb 2008 (took 4+ weeks)
The recruiter was aggressive, he painted pretty pictures of new features and cool new technologies I would be working on, but in reality, I did over a year of bugfixing on a mature technology nearing maintenance stage.
I was interviewed by 7 people overall, from 10am up to 6pm in the evening when I had the final conversation with the recruiter.
The interview questions were not too hard, I got some usual questions on linked lists and trees. Other questions were mostly about hardware and low-level drivers. I wasn't asked any puzzles that MS was once famous for, but I got several interesting questions about emulating an old console game on modern hardware and about avoiding issues with problematic hardware.

Negotiation Details
The initial offer was lowballed, lower than the low bound of my expected salary range. The recruiter was telling me a lot of nonsense on how the hiring manager looks at all the other salaries in the team and determines the salary for the new hire and how it is better to come in with lower expectations and then get up to 20% cash bonus instead of negotiating a higher salary upfront. We went back and forth a few times, and I was able to negotiate a higher salary only after I got an offer from another company. The salary was still was at the low end of my expected salary range, but they rolled in some sign-on bonuses and stock grants to cover the difference for the first year of employment.

Interviewed Oct 2009 (took 2 days)
Very casual. There were no "pre-determined" interview questions. I don't believe anyone I met with had an agenda and depending on the individual, we spoke like a) friends b) co-workers or c) business partners. I communicated with the recruiter, then had phone interviews with a couple folks on the team, went into the office to meet about 5 individuals and was presented the offer the same day I went in. All together, about a one week process.
Negotiation Details
Do not negotiate - I mean, this is Microsoft. Maybe you can negotiate things like work schedule or your office location, but don't even try with salary. Unless you are a VP. My advice would be to be very picky with your manager and your team when deciding to take an offer. They will make/break your ability to be happy at microsoft.

Interviewed Sep 2009 (took a day)
This was a first round PM interview. It lasted 30 mins. The questions were pretty straightforward and definitely not meant to get you off balance. I was asked why I wanted the PM position, a coding question related to linked listsd, a software improvement question, and a life experience question. All in all, quite chill.
