Application

I applied online. The process took a weekinterviewed at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in January 2015.

Interview

Was contacted within a week for a phone call, which was half and hr, and in a few days about coming in for an in-person interview. I asked about the interview process and he said there would be ONE interview with just him. He sounded rather young and inexperienced as an interviewer but hey, it's Morgan Stanley. I come in the next day, and it was him and another person, a woman who was pretty high up. I was kind of taken aback about having to repeat everything that we talked about on the phone with the first guy, and the two were both very unprofessional, could barely explain what the job was when I asked about the work-life balance (which is not a question about the aspects of the job, obviously they had no idea what work-life balance is, and when he would try to explain the job, he would look over at the coordinator like he wasn't even sure). Later I was contacted about a potential second interview. Very unorganized for company with such a reputation.

Interview Questions

  • How would you go about doing a project (very general, in the randomest part of the conversation)
How do you solve problems (also very general)

I applied online. The process took 3+ monthsinterviewed at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney (Philadelphia, PA) in February 2014.

    Interview

Applied in October and received a call from a recruiter in February. Quick conversation to confirm interest in the position and schedule a phone interview for the following week.

    Interview Questions

    • Basic screening questions. Are you currently working/tell me about your current responsibilties/why are you looking for a new opportunity? Why do you think you're a good fit for this company/position? She offered a brief overview of the position. I wouldn't say this was an unexpected question but she asked what I knew about the company. Final question was in regards to salary. She asked about my current salary and what sort of pay range I was expecting from this position.   1 Answer

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney (Baltimore, MD) in May 2013.

    Interview

I went in for a first round interview and was immediately followed up with an email inviting me back for a second interview the next week. The second interview was more questions I had for the financial group while the first interview was more about getting to know me and my previous experiences.

    Interview Questions

    • I was told I passed two unexpected "tests" that the group had for interview candidates. The first test I passed was being on time, or 5 minutes early for the interview. The second test was having an extra resume on hand because one of the associates "forgot hers".   Answer Question

    Reasons for Declining

The starting salary was lower than I expected at 35K, and upon passing the Series 7 salary only increases to 36K.

Phone interview with Complex Service Manager, then interview with multiple financial advisors at the branches to find the best fit - mostly based on personalities meshing well. Final interview is with the Branch Manager.

    Interview Questions

    • Typical questions such as why did you leave your former employeer, why do you want to work here, why did you pick your major...etc.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

Not much room for negotiation, have to take what they give you.

    Interview

I have had one interview in the office and one on the phone. I am most impressed by the friendly nature and of the employees and the professional atmosphere in the office. I have been treated in a highly respectful manner. The office interview was with two members of the team in need and the phone interview was with the director of the team.

    Interview Questions

    • Really there was nothing out of the ordinary in terms of questions... if prepared one would not be thrown off by any of the questions!   Answer Question

    Interview

Phone interview with recruiter which was pretty laid back. 1 on 1 interview wasn't too bad- general questions were asked. Everyone was very nice and outgoing. Was given a stock report and asked to explain what it is. The last interview with the senior vice president was more rigid and serious. He tried to find out if I was in it for the long term

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney (Las Vegas, NV) in January 2011.

    Interview

I received an email from the firm indicating they had found my resume on the University's career services website. The actual scheduling of the interview took 2 weeks. When an interview was finally scheduled, I requested a copy of the job description, as I was not able to find one on the internet. Upon receipt of the job description I was very disappointed. The job is an admin clerk. I have 20 years of experience in finance and accounting. I am extremely overqualified for this position. I went to the interview with the hopes that perhaps there was some mistake. When I arrived the interviewer was unprepared. I respectfully declined an opportunity to be considered for this position.
