The process was pretty straight forward, phone interview, then in person with a group and they took turns asking the questions. The interview took about one hour. Some behavioral and back ground

So, everyone applies through USA Jobs. The questionnaire on that site gauges your skills, but it's extremely vague. If you work as a forecaster in the private industry, and if you have a graduate degree, are pretty much your best ways of being "Gold Qualified" and being sent for referral. Typically, in this extremely competitive day and age, there are 150-600 applicants, depending on location (Elko won't get as many apps as San Diego, but the numbers don't vary more than 20% in the same batch opening). About 50-100 people are referred. At this point, to actually be selected, you need a few things in your favor. One, an extremely detailed resume. Use the USAJOBS resume builder, they will tell you this if you ask. Two, your best hope is to be a veteran, or someone with a graduate degree and forecasting experience. But even vets aren't completely guaranteed - a vet with just a BS is at risk of losing out to a civilian that qualifies at a higher level. A vet with a master's in meteorology is an instant acceptance, that opening is "blocked". About 10-15 people will do interviews per office. Multiple offices in the same opening may interview you. The interviews will not last more than 30 minutes, and are typically panel interviews over the phone. Although NOAA says from post of opening to hire is 80 days, budget uncertainities increased it to as much as 5 months in some locations....and that was before the hiring freeze, which may last anywhere from October 2013 to the end of 2015.

    Interview Questions
    • Questions, perhaps surprisingly, have very little to do with meteorology. They are general HR questions - "how do you handle a difficult boss", "in five minutes or less, tell us why we should hire you over the other candidates". They run on the assumption that if you've made it this far in the process, your meteorology knowledge is pretty solid.   Answer Question

It was a position with the federal government, so the process was initiated through USAJobs. The federal government has a 80-day window to job announcement to hire and these folks were following it. A human resource adviser reviewed the application for level of qualification and proceeded to forward package to the hiring official. There were a few email conversations with the hiring official, but those were more for determining an appropriate time for an interview. The interview was conducted by a panel and all participants had prepared questions. Though this ensured every candidate was presented with the exact same question, it eliminated any spontaneity or follow-on questioning. This division had an "ideal" candidate in mind, for which I wasn't their exact fit. Interestingly, and this goes towards their culture, a second opportunity opened within the organization. My application didn't make the panel despite improvements to my package.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at NWS in January 2011.

    Interview Details

After a 30 minute telephone interview with the company recruiter, was scheduled for in person interview for the following week. Met with the head of HR, and Customer Service department manager. Was asked 16 to 20 questions regarding past work experience, and some hypothetical situations. Asked about hobbies, life passions, work interests, etc... Took various tests, and was scheduled to return for group interview the following week. Group interview took place with VP of HR, C.S. Department Managers, President, and CEO - and seven other candidates.More of a role play amoung all in the room. Enjoyed the process and the people. Beautiful multi story secured building in a beautiful area. The people in the office were professional, but also friendly, and seemed to believe and really like what they did.
