First I submitted my resume on Monster, and received an email from the PI inviting me to an interview.
He interviewed me, asked general questions, but seemed to suggest that my recommendations were very strong and I was much better qualified than other applicants.
After two more weeks, I was directed to interview with HR, which was more procedural than anything.

No real negotiation. They stated their offer and there was no room to negotiate.

I contacted through email and expressed my interest in the lab and the research that it is into.
I was asked to transfer three reference letters.
I was invited for a one on one interview that was one hour long.
I was invited for a second interview in which several additional ideas that the boss didnt cover at the first place were brought up.
I was invited to give a presentation to the lab.
I was taken to lunch by one of the boss colleagues.

I met with a HR Recruiter first for an administrative position that was available. Then he directed me to a specific field I was interested in, where there was a job opening. I had a 1-on-1 interview immediately.

Everyone seemed very friendly during the interview. It was very well-organized. I had lunch along with the presentation and then dinner at a restaurant with my future boss and co-worker. Overall a very positive experience.
