Negotiation Details – commissioned
I applied through a recruiter and the process took 3 days - interviewed at Nordstrom in October 2011.
Interview Details – Phone interview once accepted to a face to face interview
Interview Question – Background Information? Answer Question
I applied online and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at Nordstrom in October 2009.
Interview Details – I applied online with very minimal work experience. There was a personality quiz to determine if you had the right sort of personality for a commissioned sales position. After that, I had a phone interview where I had to answer several customer service questions, such as "tell us about a time when you went above and beyond to help a customer", etc. After passing that interview, I had an in-person interview with an HR manager. On that same day, she told me what departments were hiring -- I had applied for shoes, but there was no opening there. After a bit of back and forth, we both decided that lingerie would be the best department for me. I met the lingerie manager that day, where we went over pay/sales expectations, etc. and did a bit of role-playing. I was offered the job by phone one or two days later.
Interview Question – I had to role-play a selling experience with my potential new manager. It wasn't particularly unexpected, but was definitely stressful for me as I had very little work experience. Answer Question
Negotiation Details – I did not negotiate, as the pay was straight commission with no hourly and the percentages were standard by department.
I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Nordstrom.
Interview Details – First, a phone interview for background info and behavioral screenings.
Second you are asked to come in for an in person interview. For my position, I am guessing was a round of hires for summer positions so several managers from several departments were in a room and we rotated a couple times, speaking with different people.
Interview Question – How do you deal with conflict. For example, a customer comes in demanding a return for something that was not purchased at Nordstrom. What do you do? Answer Question
Very Easy Interview
I applied online - interviewed at Nordstrom in October 2012.
Interview Details – Human resources is very professional and approachable. They ask why Nordstrom? What qualities do you have that can make you successful in a commission-based environment? You can apply for one position, but they usually ask if you are interested in any other available positions. If you are, you can meet with the different department managers (DO IT to make sure you don't work for a bad manager - it can be the different between a great or horrible experience)
Interview Question – None, it was really easy. They genuinely want you because it is no loss for them to hire you (sorry if it seems shallow). If you don't make sales, you'll get the minimum $8.50 but you'll just get fired if it keeps happening. Answer Question
I applied online and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Nordstrom.
Interview Details – Interviewed with HR on Friday, interviewed with Dept. Manager an hour later, phone interview with Store Manager on Saturday, job offer a couple hours later!
Interview Question – All questions were fairly common for retail. Answer Question
Very Easy Interview
I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at Nordstrom in August 2012.
Interview Details – Went through a fairly quick interview - met with hiring manager and human resource manager and it lasted about 30 mins total - they then called the store manager over and that took another 10 mins. When I left my phone rang about an hour later offering me the job. Very simple process
Interview Question – They really did not ask any difficult questions. The job is menial at best. View Answer
Negotiation Details – No negotiations - it is flat salary or if you make your quotas you get the commissioned rate (that is different based on the depart you are working in.
I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Nordstrom.
Interview Details – I applied to several department based sales positions online. I was contacted by HR via phone a day later. A brief phone screen was conducted and in the phone screen, we set up an onsite interview. I would highly recommend walking the sales floors that you are applying for a day before your interview. I would also recommend knowing a few of the brands that are in the department by browsing the company website. In the interview, I dressed professionally but stylish and brought an extra copy of my resume which came in handy. The questions were fairly expected like "Why Nordstrom?" "Tell me about a time when..." etc. After meeting with the HR interviewer, I met with a department manager. We walked the sales floor and I was asked to pick out three outfits for a woman who works downtown and goes to social events straight from work. Having walked the floor earlier, I felt prepared in pulling these garments rather quickly. We talked about the brands on the floor and who the customer for that department is. I then met with the store manager who asked me about my five year goals, etc. The department manager offered me the job via phone the next day.

Interview Question – Why do you want to work for this store View Answer
I applied in-person and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Nordstrom.
Interview Details – The interview process took a little bit longer than I thought, as I originally thought that I did very well in the interview but was not called back for some time. Fortunately, I did get the job. The interview was great, but I would recommend being prepared to show your sales demonstration on the floor. Your manager will pretend to be a customer, and ask you something she/he is looking for. Provide a LOT of options, and go above and beyond what they ask. Take charge, and be confident. I suggest going in and checking out the floor layout prior to your interview, and be prepared to wow them with a selling performance that is up to par.
Interview Question – How do you feel about knowing your sales performance will be public knowledge to coworkers on a regular basis? Answer Question
