I applied through college or university. The process took 2 daysinterviewed at Norfolk Southern in October 2014.

    Interview Details

I spoke with recruiters at my school during a career fair who later contacted me to schedule an interview. I was then interviewed by two recruiters who were very polite and straight forward. It was a standard interview with mostly behavioral questions and being a student with limited job experience a majority of the interview was revolved around my resume and an explanation of the position itself and the training involved.

    Conductor Interview

    Application Details

I applied in-person – interviewed at Norfolk Southern.

    Interview Details

Completed their candidate profile. Then applied for a few conductor positions.

Received a email inviting me to hire sessions. Locations with a date and time.

Received a phone call confirming my attendance.

Arrive early. The session begins at 8:00 sharp and they want the attendance taken before that.

They give you a briefing. They let you know upfront the reason there are not people lined up from the hotel to the high way is because of the life sacrifices you make starting out. They also tell you if you fail the drug test you will be put in a database and blacklisted for a lot of jobs. Then they tell you the perks of it and give you a 15 min break to consider everything.

3 people out of 20 didn't return after the break.

You then take an aptitude and personality test. They grade it and ask you to leave the room while they make the final cut for interviews.

Interview is straight forward. I don't think anyone that wore jeans, boots, and wore a hat made the cut. They cut it down to 8.

I was lucky enough to be told everything sounded great at the conclusion of my interview.

The next morning I got the conditional job offer.

Now I am scheduling my physical and background test.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeksinterviewed at Norfolk Southern in April 2014.

    Interview Details

Referred by a friend and applied online myself at the same time. Had a brief talk with HR and took a online behavior test and attended an orientation. They flew me over in 2 or 3 weeks. The group was pretty busy with their own work when I was there. 1. I took two paper tests first: one on analytical skills (math modeling, basic statistics, probability..) the other one on programming (C++, sql). 2. Then talked to two senior persons. Most of the questions are on combinatorial optimization (algoirthm complexity, knapsack, shortest path, etc.). They extended an offer the second day but I could not go becasue of university regulations.

    • I did not know much about using fibonacci heap for shortest path problem which was brought up by one of the senior operations researcers.   View Answer

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Norfolk Southern in October 2014.

    Interview Details

Applied online. After a few days, I was asked to complete an online assessment. After 3 weeks, they invited me for an on-site interview. I was also asked to participate in an hour long virtual career day (it was a presentation about the company) which is necessary for all the people who want to work for the company. In the interview, first, they gave all the candidates for this internship position a test (an hour long or something like that). The test was about concepts of OR, statistics, and logic of programming. After the test, each interviewee went to a separate room for their interviews. I was interviewed by two of the managers. The questions were very detailed about the resume and whatever I mentioned there. After a week or so from my interview, they called me to tell me about the offer and then they send me the offer via email.

I applied online – interviewed at Norfolk Southern.

    Interview Details

Applied for summer internship on company website. Didn't get an invite for an interview until about 4+ weeks later. Initial phone interview with HR Rep lasted about 30 mins. Asked how much I knew about the position, my academics, and leadership experience. Discussed the position in more detail, and then invited me for a face-to-face interview. For 2nd interview, met with an HR rep and an engineer in the company. Asked basic interview questions and went in-depth about the position. Only about 20 - 30 mins.

I applied through a recruiter – interviewed at Norfolk Southern in October 2013.

    Interview Details

Met at a career fair, gave them my resumes, texted me to set up an interview the next day. Had literally a 10 minute interview and than had to take a 3 part online assessment, now I am waiting to hear back.

Interview was basic questions, nothing about the actual railroad, he made it very clear to me that they would teach me all that it takes to work in there field. I interviewed with a worker and a recruiter at the same time, they asked questions mainly about how I would handle myself in situations like heavy lifting, or getting dirty in the work place since it is a very hands on job. Also asked me if I was willing to relocate, this seemed to be a make or break for them.

I applied through college or university – interviewed at Norfolk Southern in July 2012.

    Interview Details

I was contacted 4-5 months after applying online. They simply asked if I was still interested in employment and I, the unemployed college grad that I was, said yes. I filled out an online questionnaire. This was quite extensive. I was then contacted for an interview in norfolk. They flew me out and put me up in a hotel for a night. After that interview I was contacted again to do a second interview in Atlanta. Same deal, they put me up in a hotel for the night. After a day worth of interviews, dinner, and a question session with a current trainee, they sent us to the airport to fly home. I was contacted while at the airport with a job offer.

    Interview Questions
    • When interviewing in Atlanta, I interviewed with high level bosses. They wanted to hear commitment with the company. The railroad is a very old school industry and the higher level bosses have the same old school mentality. They were interested in hearing about where I saw my future with the company and if I was willing to bleed and sweat Norfolk Southern.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
They laid out what they offered management trainees from the first interview. Plain and simple, no negotiating at that point.
