Analyst, Alternative Investments Interview

Analyst, Alternative Investments

Interviewed at Northern Trust

Interview Details – I met with two team leaders and two hiring managers respectively, they have two openings at that time under alternative investments division but different groups. It was straight two hours interview and interviewers are very nice. Basically team leaders introduced the details of job responsibilities and hiring managers are the ones did the very formal interview. They are interested in knowing very perspective of a interviewee, not just school stuff. They want to know that you are willing to be on the top of everything and plan before hand.

Interview Question – I felt like probably I gave one of the hiring managers the impression of being very aggressive, when I said I was volunteering in helping kids with their science projects, he asked in what kind of way I was working with the kids. He probably thought I would put my thoughts on the kids instead of using their own ideas I guess. I was a little bit worried.   Answer Question

Fund Analyst Interview

I applied through an employee referral and the process took a day - interviewed at Northern Trust.

Interview Details – Got called in after applying online almost instantly, they also told me the salary minimum over the phone before the interview which was a bit weird.

I went in talked to the HR manager, and then three different managers. Some of the questions were straight forward (strengths, weakness, team work examples etc) Others were more technical but easy for finance majors such as (what is a 401k plan, what is a stock, bond, option, mutual fund, what is GAAP)

Interview Question – Easy but Unexpected question- put the securities from least risky to most risky: Stocks, mutual fund, options, bond   View Answer

I applied through an employee referral and the process took 2 months - interviewed at Northern Trust in May 2012.

Interview Details – Initially referred by an employee and applied on-line. HR called a few weeks later to set-up an in-person interview. Met with three hiring managers who conducted a pretty straight-forward behavioral interview. My referrer said my prospects were good but it took HR several weeks to follow-up with an offer.

Interview Question – Very basic behavioral questions, e.g. "Describe a stressful situation at work and how you handled it."   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – My referrer said my offer was at the top range for the position so I did not negotiate. In retrospect I would have asked for a bit more as I had prior professional experience.

I applied online - interviewed at Northern Trust in November 2012.

Interview Details – (Wasn't the exact position, but was an accountant position) Got called a few weeks after I filled out the basic online application. Went in for an interview.. the interview consisted of about 4 or 5 members from a team interviewing me. After one was done they would send another member in.. during one transfer of interviewees I waited a good 35 min waiting...
Overall the questions were basic interview type questions- no major surprises.

Interview Question – None.. All basic Questions.. may ask experience with Microsoft office .   Answer Question

I applied through an employee referral and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Northern Trust in October 2013.

Interview Details – Received a call from HR and interviewed the following week. Interview consisted of 3 1:1 interviews. It was mostly conversational with few questions. Interviewers explained the position very well and went through my resume asking questions about work experience and education. It was relatively quick a painless. No difficult questions.

Interview Question – If someone is falling behind in your group with their work what would you do?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Very little room for negotiation.

I applied online and the process took 2 months - interviewed at Northern Trust in June 2013.

Interview Details – I received a call from HR and they arranged a 30 minute telephone interview with me, consisting mainly of behavioral questions.

Two weeks later I was told I was going to move to the second round and had an interview with three "partners" (aka employees). Each interview was thirty minutes, on site with a prospective coworker / colleague, the hiring manager and the hiring manager's manager. I was initially told that the last interview was with someone in HR, but that did not happen and instead it was with the manager's manager, which threw me a bit because I hadn't prepared for that. Thankfully, these were all pretty casual and unstructured interviews, with no artificial behavioral questions which I expected from a big corporation like this.

About two weeks after my on-site interviews I got a call offering me the job (which was a little after when they originally told me they'd get back to me, so I was a little bit nervous).

Interview Questions

  • I need someone who is able to do XXX, could you explain to me why you're suited to do that?   View Answer
  • What kind of work would you like be doing in five years?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – No negotiaition - they gave me a very reasonable number, and I asked whether there was any room for movement on that figure and the HR woman told me no, and kindly explained the process by which it was determined, and the approval process for the number.

Operations Analyst (IOO) Interview

Operations Analyst (IOO)

Interviewed at Northern Trust

Interview Details – Got a phone call to come in for an interview. Was supposed to be a 2 part interview but the HR lady wasn't in the office, so I went directly to the 3 panel interview with the VP of the IOO department and two team leads. They pretty much started bombarding me with questions and didn't do a good job explaining the role... And believe me I researched as much as I could, I'm sure you guys have realized how vague NT's job postings are if you are reading this. Most of the questions were pretty standard though. Be ready to defend your resume.

Interview Question – How long does it take for you to get money after you sell a stock?   Answer Question
