It was just an in person interview. Easy questions just asking about myself and basically going over the resume.

Interviewed Mar 2011 in Troy, MI (took 2 months)
It was a fit interview completely. I was interviewed twice a month or so apart. They tried to pressure me by saying how competitive the internship is to get. However, if you go to a good university it isn't a problem. They want high caliber people if they can get them, but it's hard for them to due to other employers.
In general, a very personal and informal interview that showed a genuine interest in its people.

Northwestern Mutual is always looking for talented students, so it doesn't matter if you don't go to a target school or don't know anyone who works there. Typically, you submit your resume online, and are contacted by a recruiter to setup a site visit. Once there, the campus recruiter will ask you basic questions to get to know you - nothing to lose sweat over - but mainly talk you through the internship, and answer any questions that you may have (prepare some!). The second step is completing a personality inventory, which the recruiter sent me in an email and I had to complete within a week. Once your personality matches, you move to the next step, which involves conducting a market survey. In the survey, you are expected to call 20 alumni of your school (or friends, relatives, etc that you may know) and ask some random questions about the financial industry, but most importantly referrals to 5 other people from each person. To do well as an intern at Northwestern Mutual, you need good people skills, high tolerance for rejection, and - most importantly - a natural market. If you know enough people in the area, you can easily complete the market survey, go to the final interview, and start the internship. Like I mentioned earlier, Northwestern Mutual is always looking for talented individuals so even if you did not do well one year, you can always go back and apply again.

Interviewed May 2011 in Dallas, TX (took 3 weeks)
Had to go in for a total of 5 times. First time was an information session with 15 or so college students. If we were interested, we scheduled interviews with the hiring manager. Met with them for 5 minutes and was assigned a project to meet with 5 people and collect information with their experience with financial services and get 5 referrals from them. Turned that in on the 3rd meeting, assigned another task to call 5 former interns and interview them about their experience. Turn in those answers, then asked to schedule a time to meet with the college director and was offered the internship. Basically they accept anyone as long as you complete the tasks.

Interviewed Jun 2010 in East Lansing, MI (took 2 days)
The first interview I had met with a lady who was apparently screening candidates for the internship but she seemed like she was hyping me up about insurance. It must have been pretty close to her standard sales pitch because I felt like I was being sold a policy. On the second interview I met with a man who was a senior manager. he never reviewed my qualifications, he had not even looked at my resume. He asked me to tell him what was basically in my resume that he should have read. I told him to find it and read it if he is serious about hiring me.

When he read it he noticed that I was a veteran and said "We don't typically like to work with former military because they can be a little intense". I am a disabled war veteran so I found this to be quite disrespectful and very unprofessional. I cut the interview short for a 2PM tee time at the local golf corse.
My advice is save your time and go golfing
For the next 3 months I received numerous emails of rather questionable material such as pornography, off color jokes, etc.

Interviewed Nov 2009 (took 2+ weeks)
The recruiters came to our school to conduct one on one interviews and then selected those that they thought were a best fit. Then I had a series of 2 other interviews with the same people in which I had to do a presentation for them. The first two times they came to my school and the last I had to go to them.

Interviewed Feb 2011 (took 2 days)
I found the job online, and they were looking for what essentially is a sales intern. This interview consisted of three separate interviews. The first was a breeze -- they mainly asked about your background, what school you went to, etc. The second was similar. It had nothing difficult, although they did ask you to prepare a sort-of sales pitch to the interviewer. It was during the second interview that they ask you to fill out the names and contact information of the closest people you know who might be interested in their products. It was at this point that I backed out.
