Interviewed Mar 2011 in Troy, MI (took 2 months)
It was a fit interview completely. I was interviewed twice a month or so apart. They tried to pressure me by saying how competitive the internship is to get. However, if you go to a good university it isn't a problem. They want high caliber people if they can get them, but it's hard for them to due to other employers.
In general, a very personal and informal interview that showed a genuine interest in its people.

Interviewed Dec 2011 in Dallas, TX (took a day)
I submitted an application through the school, and received a phone call a day later to schedule an interview. Upon arriving on site, I received a question air over entrepreneurial skill. Then went into the interview room, which consisted of personality based questions. Then realized I would be selling insurance to my network, and I didn't want to become the pushy insurance sales person. I told them this was not for me.

Interviewed Nov 2011 in Wilmington, NC (took 2 weeks)
My interviewer first asked me to fully explain my resume and what sales experience I have. She then asked me how I have dealt with rejection before & what motivates me to work. She then asked me my feelings on a purely driven commission position. The second interview they show you what you are selling (mainly insurance) then she asks you what you thought about the information packet she gave you at the end of the first interviewer. The last interview you give the interviewer & the director of the local northwestern a presentation on why they should choose you. They then will extend an offer or inform you of their decision in a few days.

Reason for Declining
This company seems to rely on "family friends" to buy your product and not true sales. I was looking for something that would put me out in front of other businesses/people I did not know and be able to show them my product and them be able to tell that my product is the best.
However, I feel this product is very overpriced and did not believe in it. Therefore, this was not a good fit for me.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Mendota Heights, MN (took 2 days)
Interviewed in person with the same recruiter as I did on the phone. She was an alum of the university I attend so we talked about things related to the university for a few minutes. Basic questions, describe yourself, where you see yourself in 5-10 years, define success and what makes a person successful. Answered some of my questions I had, gave me a tour of the area where the current interns work (none were there, as I assume they all were in class), talked to a few full time reps for a couple of minutes. Pretty easy stuff.

Interviewed May 2011 in Staten Island, NY (took 3 days)
A little while after I applied for the position I got a phone call to schedule an interview. The location of the interview was in their Staten Island office. It was a pretty basic interview, first the interviewer gave a little introduction into the job and how the program and compensation would work. After that he asked me some questions about myself, family, personal hobbies and interests. He was interested in the amount of people I knew and how many people I could network with, since those we're the people I would try to obtain as clients.

Pay was almost nothing initially. It was 100$ a week for 10 weeks, plus commission. Realistically its expected that you would get commissions off of 5-10 clients, which could turn out to be decent pay. Another thing I didn't like is that they pretty much just use you for your network. I hadn't experienced this myself, but I've heard that once you actually have a sit down meeting with clients, the higher ups do all the talking, and you sort of just bring the clients in. It could be a good learning experience, but realistically you're just pitching their products to friends, family, and anybody else you know, something I didn't really want to do.

Interviewed Dec 2011 in San Francisco, CA (took 3 weeks)
Applied online. Went through a phone screen a few days later. Scheduled an interview two days later. I prepared very intensely for the interview. Studied all aspects of the company, took their sales test, prepared recruiting strategies and prepared for anticipated questions. Both the phone screen and one-on-one interview were with the head recruiter. A couple of candidates moved on to a second round. Prepping is a must for an interview! I've never prepped so much for one. Bring your A++ game. They prefer experience in recruiting for commission-only jobs.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in York, PA (took a day)
Northwestern Mutual is always looking for talented students, so it doesn't matter if you don't go to a target school or don't know anyone who works there. Typically, you submit your resume online, and are contacted by a recruiter to setup a site visit. Once there, the campus recruiter will ask you basic questions to get to know you - nothing to lose sweat over - but mainly talk you through the internship, and answer any questions that you may have (prepare some!). The second step is completing a personality inventory, which the recruiter sent me in an email and I had to complete within a week. Once your personality matches, you move to the next step, which involves conducting a market survey. In the survey, you are expected to call 20 alumni of your school (or friends, relatives, etc that you may know) and ask some random questions about the financial industry, but most importantly referrals to 5 other people from each person. To do well as an intern at Northwestern Mutual, you need good people skills, high tolerance for rejection, and - most importantly - a natural market. If you know enough people in the area, you can easily complete the market survey, go to the final interview, and start the internship. Like I mentioned earlier, Northwestern Mutual is always looking for talented individuals so even if you did not do well one year, you can always go back and apply again.
