Interviewed Jan 2010 (took 4+ weeks)
Take personality assessment, meet with office point of contact (total joke, 1st meeting serves solely as a screening process). Wait 2 weeks for a person of authority to get around to calling ou back, review personality assessment, and meet several more times until you ask for the job. NML wants you to show your motivation by going after the position vs. having it offered to you. Then, series of meeting re compensation structure (you get a $4,000 signing bonus and realisticaly can expect to make $0 in commission your first 2 months). There are no benefits, insurance is expensive, and you pay monthly fees just to sit at your cubicle. The "average" first year commission management will sell you (I was told $67,000) is not realistic. The average 1st year NML rep makes $15,000 before paying office expenses and paying for health insurance.

Interviewed Mar 2012 in Waterloo, IA (took 5 weeks)
Very non-threatening. They literally recruited me by calling me out of the blue and asking me if I wanted to find out more about Northwestern (aka an interview). The recruiter was very positive during the interview and things went really well. I'm waiting on getting a 3rd interview. I feel confident this company will be a good fit for my skill set. I guess I'll have to wait and see how everything turns out.

Interviewed May 2011 in Boston, MA (took 1+ week)
This was one of the most long winded, and excruciatingly painful interviews I have ever endured. I was first contacted by Northwestern Mutual after they claimed my contact information at a career fair held at my college. Due to the displacement between my college (NY), and the office I was applying for (Boston, MA), I was first interviewed over the phone. During the phone interview I was asked the typical questions, greatest challenges, biggest failures, etc. After I passed this stage I was asked to come in to a group interview in their Boston offices. I drove the 5 hours from college to their office in Boston and waited in their lobby with several other current college students. Finally we were all ushered into a room with a insurance agent who didn't look entirely excited about the presentation he had likely given a dozen times that month. The presentation was typical of any insurance company, a general run through on the difference between term and whole life insurance packages. After about 45 minutes the sales associate handed out a packets to everyone in the room, and we were told that in order to move to the next round of interviews these packets had to be filled entirely. The packets consisted of ten forms, each of which were three pages long. A single form required you to call a friend of the family, a relative, a former associate - anyone within your social 'circle', and ask them a variety of different questions all of which pertained in one way or another to life insurance. I need not mention what NWM likely does with the countless pages of information they get from the people they don't hire. These surveys also contained a an additional page and a half of questions directed toward you about how you felt about the phone interview and other questions along that nature. The Boston office boasted that they were the only branch that required for 10 of these nightmarish surveys, and I overheard an applicant saying that another branch only required 2. After about 5-6 hours of actual work - plus another 2 hours at least for coordinating these phone interviews, they were completed. ( They require that you meet half these people in person, but since I was displaced from the area in which I was to be expected to sell they made an exception)

Reason for Declining
'Cold Calling' friends of the family and other people whom I've grown to respect and admire just to talk about insurance was one of the most degrading experiences of my life. If you value your network of friends, don't turn them over to Northwestern.

Interviewed Jan 2012 in Clinton, NJ (took 3+ weeks)
Contacted by HR women to come in for interview with Managing Director. 1st interview was all about explaining the Mutual Fit process about the company and career. After that took and personality test online and came back in for 2nd interview, was told how I was a perfect fit for this career. After asking questions about compensation I found out the position is 100% commission based and they require candidates to fill out 10 market survey's that require you to interview family and friends in your network and analyze if they would be good clients for you in the future to sell their products to. Ended the interview process after this, didn't want to start my career selling life insurance as a recent college grad with virtually no network of potential clients.
Interview Questions
Reason for Declining
Sounded very promising at 1st with awards NWM has one for best place to launch career but ALL-commission based salary is challenging for recent college grad to start off with.
