Interview Question

Technical Support Engineer Interview Broomfield, CO

Nothing difficult or unexpected -- gloves are off and

everything is fair game during an interview, for this type of position, when the qualifications and experience required are so diverse. However, I do not like the improv approach to troubleshooting questions during and interview. If the problem written down and is not subject to change on the fly, because it is developing as the interviewee is asking questions, it may be a good tool for assessing a candidates competency.

Question: Server Keeps Rebooting. Take your time and ask questions if you are presented with this question. "is it rebooting or shutting down?" "can I log in and check the event log to see if this is a process causing the problem?", "Is it in a Data Center with adequate cooling and backup power?","How long before reboots/shutdowns?". Do not give them the impression you are lost and then steer you to the solution with hints that lead you down a path to troubleshoot something that is not the problem. Make sure you define the guidlines on how this faux support call for a downed server is going to go. ie. Are you handling this interview question as though the Interviewer is an actual customer and does not know the answer to the problem (which unfortunately he/she does because they are the one making it up.)
