Interviewed Sep 2010 in Emeryville, CA (took 4+ weeks)
The phone screening process was typical where HR goes through your resume and makes sure that you are technically a fit for the position, at least as far as the job description is concerned. The next step in the process was an invite to give a presentation to the bioinformatics team. This part was strange in that they team seemed disinterested in even attending. Many of those who were listed to be attendees did not show up. I was not greeted by the hiring manager, nor did anyone give me the impression that they were serious in hiring someone. I get the impression that I was some sort of courtsey interview because they already had someone in mind. I know this is a becoming normal in the industry, but it would be nice to be officially told down the line whether you are still in consideration for a position or not. Generally, I was of the impression that even if offered to continue the interview process, I wouldn't want to proceed. I felt unwelcome. Also, I got the the impression that the team was overworked, very stressed, and didn't actually enjoy working together. If that matters to you, I'd be wary of this.

Interviewed Oct 2010 (took a day)
I submitted my application through novartis.com career link. I got an email from the hiring manager about a position I have applied. We made a time to talk over the phone. In the phone interview, he asked the skills I mentioned in my resume. Then he decided to give me an onsite interview.
They are very friendly. They booked flight, hotel and pick up cars for me. The office enviroment is casual and no business attires are necessary.

Got a call from the Hiring manager, asked me very simple questions, but the fact that was not living in the country made it hard to get a face-to -face interview, they hired someone with more experience.
